25 August 2023 Sports

The Packers on Thursday officially named Sean Clifford their backup quarterback for the 2023 season. The rookie out of Penn State has a solid first two preseason games and now will be the number two quarterback behind Jordan Love.

“I think it’s safe to say Sean is our No. 2 quarterback,” LaFleur said Thursday. “I think a lot of it is just his mental makeup. We saw it in the Cincinnati game, in terms of his ability to rebound. The game is not too big for him. So I think when the moments are at their highest – which is typically in your 2-minute situations – he’s out there calm, cool and collected.”

Also Thursday, David Bakhtiari returned for the no-pads workout. Darnell Savage returned after dropping out early on Wednesday.

Rookie Kicker Anders Carlson was tested by special team’s coach Rick Bisaccia on Thursday.   Bisaccia iced the kicker before one of his attempts which Carlon went on to make. . Then Bisaccia called a bogus false start to move him back 5 yards, and Carlson made that kick as well. But the real test came at the end of practice.  With one second on the clock in a tie game from 50-yards out with the entire team surrounding Carlson, heckling him and even squirting him with water bottles; he missed the first but made the second.

After missing two extra points in the first preseason game against the Bengals, Carlson bounced back with a good game against the Patriots las Saturday, including a 52-yard field goal to end the first half.  So far inside Lambeau Field with family night and one preseason game, he’s only missed on of this 13 kicks.

The Packers close out the preseason Saturday at noon when they host Seattle at Lambeau Field.  You can hear all of the action beginning with the pregame at 10:00 on FM 1023, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football Pittsburgh shutout the Falons in Atlanta 24-0 and the Cots won at Philadelphia 27-13.

In games tonight Detroit is at Carolina, the Patriots play at Tennessee and the Chargers are at San Francisco to take on the 49ers.

After an off-day the Brewers are back in action tonight at American Family Field, hosting San Diego.  Milwaukee is coming off a two-game series sweep at home over the Twins.  The Brewers will send Brandon Woodruff (2-1, 2.89 ERA) to the mound against the Padres right-hander Yu Darvish )(8-9, 4.35 ERA.  First pitch is at 7.10.

In the NL Central Thursday the Cubs nipped the Pirates 5-4 and the Diamondbacks shaded the Reds 3-2.  The Brewers lead the Cubs by 3 games and the Reds by 4 in the division.

In the Midwest League on Thursday the Timber Rattlers lost at home to Quad Cities 3-2. They meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:40.

Miilwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokuonmpo said he does not plan to sign a contract extension when he becomes eligible next month and that he won’t sign one until he’s comfortable knowing the organization will continue to compete for a championship.

In an interview with the New York Times published Thursday, the two-time MVP said “numbers-wise it doesn’t make sense,” adding that the organization still has something to prove before he potentially signs an extension next summer.

“Next summer it would make more sense for both parties. Even then, I don’t know,” Antetokounmpo said in the interview. “I would not be the best version of myself if I don’t know that everybody’s on the same page, everybody’s going for a championship, everybody’s going to sacrifice time away from their family like I do. And if I don’t feel that, I’m not signing.”

Antetokounmpo will enter the third season of a five-year, $228 million supermax extension in 2023-24. His contract includes a player option after the 2024-25 season.

The Bucks can offer Antetokounmpo a three-year, $173 million extension beginning Sept. 22. However, Antetokounmpo outlined the factors that will go into his decision-making before he signs his next deal. “At the end of the day, I feel like all my teammates know and the organization knows that I want to win a championship,” he told The Times. “As long as we’re on the same page with that and you show me and we go together to win a championship, I’m all for it. The moment I feel like, ‘Oh, yeah, we’re trying to rebuild’ … there will never be hard feelings with the Milwaukee Bucks.”

Antetokounmpo reiterated a desire he has expressed in the past: to remain with one franchise his entire career, as Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki did. But he also called winning the NBA title in 2021 “the best feeling” he has had in basketball. He indicated that he would prioritize that feeling above all else when it comes to his future.
