Tyrone Taylor hit a go-ahead RBI single and highlighted a five-run sixth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Minnesota Twins 7-3 on Tuesday night in an interleague matchup of division leaders.
Willy Adames NL Central-leading Milwaukee and Christian Vazques of AL Central-best Minnesota hit two-run homers.
The Brewers rallied against reliever Dylan Floro (4-6) after getting held in check by starter Bailey Ober, who left after throwing 78 pitches.
Ober retired the last eight men he faced before departing with a 3-2 lead at the end of five innings. Floro allowed hits to six of the first seven batters he faced, with five of them scoring.
William Contreras and Carlos Santana started the rally with consecutive singles. After Floro struck out Adames, Mark Canha singled home Contreras and advanced to second on right fielder Matt Wallner’s errant throw to third.
Taylor then produced a bloop hit to right that brought home Santana with the go-ahead run. Taylor has gone 8 for 16 over his last five games to improve his batting average from .178 to .216.
With the Twins’ infield playing in, Brice Turang hit a liner off shortstop Carlos Correa’s glove for an RBI single. Brian Anderson drove in two more runs with a single up the middle.
The Brewers benefited from soft contact during that rally. Anderson’s two-run single had an exit velocity of just 80.6 mph, while the Turang and Taylor singles had exit velocities below 65 mph.
Milwaukee’s Bryse Wilson (5-0), Hoby Milner and Trevor Megill combined for four innings of shutout relief. Wilson struck out three and didn’t allow a base runner in two innings.
The Brewers had taken the lead on Adames’ 20th homer of the season – a two-out shot to left in the first inning. Vázquez answered with a two-run, two-out homer in the second.
Minnesota took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when Kyle Farmerr’s one-out single scored Jordan Luplow, who had reached on a leadoff double.
Brewers starter Wade Miley struck out four and allowed three runs, five hits and one walk in five innings. Ober struck out three and gave up two runs, two hits and three walks in five innings.
RHP Kenta Maeda (3-7, 4.13 ERA) starts for the Twins and RHP Corbin Burnes (9-6, 3.43) pitches for the Brewers as this two-game series concludes Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is at 1:10.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Tigers beat the Cubs 8-6, the Pirates downed the Cardinals 6-3 and the Reds edged the Angels 4-3. The Brewers lead the Cubs by 3 ½ games and the Reds by 4 in the division.
In the Midwest League Tuesday the Timber Rattlers won at home over Quad Cities 4-3. They play again this afternoon with the first pitch at 12:10.
Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Rashan Gary is participating in 11-on-11 drills again as he recovers from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
However he still isn’t saying whether he expects to be ready for the season opener.
“We’ll see,” Gary said Tuesday. “Right now we’re taking it day by day.”
Tuesday marked the first time Gary had joined his teammates in 11-on-11 drills, a major step forward in his recovery. Gary’s 2022 season ended when he tore the ACL in his right knee Nov. 6 during a 15-9 at Detroit. Gary had been participating in individual drills since getting activated from the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 7.
The Packers open the season Sept. 10 at Chicago. Gary said his availability for that game would depend on “being consistent and feeling what I need to feel” over the next few weeks.
Gary played only nine games last season, but his six sacks still ranked second on the team, behind Preston Smith’s 8½. Gary had at least one sack in each of Green Bay’s first four games.
If Gary is unable to play against the Bears, the Packers likely would have Kingsley Enagbare start in his place, with Smith at the other outside linebacker spot. Enagbare, a 2022 fifth-round pick from South Carolina, had two sacks and forced and recovered a fumble Saturday in the Packers’ 21-17 preseason loss to the New England Patriots.
The Packers signed cornerback Elijah Hamilton and waived injured guard/center Jake Hanson on Tuesday. Hanson was a 2020 sixth-round pick from Oregon. Hanson had left the Patriots game with a shin injury.
With temperatures expected to reach the 90s, the Green Bay Packers have announced a time adjustment for fans watching the public practice on Wednesday.
The Packers have moved the start of Wednesday’s practice to 11 a.m. CT at Ray Nitschke Field, citing the expected warm temperatures.
Originally slated for noon, Wednesday’s practice is the final open public practice of the 2023 training camp.
The Indoor Football League (IFL) has added a 15th team for the 2024 season.
On Tuesday, the IFL announced that the Jacksonville Sharks will join the 14 teams currently in the league.
That list includes the Green Bay Blizzard, who was honored as the 2023 IFL Franchise of the Year.
Jacksonville has an extensive indoor football history, having been a part of the Arena Football League (AFL) from 2010 to 2016 and the National Arena League (NAL) from 2017 to 2023. The Sharks won an AFL championship in 2011 and NAL championships in 2017, 2019, and 2023.
According to IFL officials, expansion is anticipated to continue in the coming years with more teams expected to be added.
The IFL is the longest-running professional indoor football league in the nation. It grew its resume last season by developing partnerships with CBS Sports, Simplebet, and the XFL.
