Max Scherzer moved into 11th place on the career strikeout list just before an erratic stretch when he forced in a pair of runs, and the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers beat the Texas Rangers 6-2 on Sunday for a three-game series sweep.

Corey Seager hit his 23rd homer for the AL West-leading Rangers (72-52), who matched a season high with their fourth consecutive loss.

No. 9 batter Tyrone Taylor had a two-run triple and scored three times for Milwaukee (68-57), which maintained its three-game division lead over the second-place Chicago Cubs.

Brewers starter Adrian Houser (5-4) struck out seven and allowed one run over five innings. Closer Devin Williams got his 30th save in 33 chances after coming in to get the final out with two on and an unearned run already in.

Scherzer (12-5) had won his first three starts for Texas since his trade from the New York Mets. He got his 3,343rd strikeout when Brice Turang whiffed opening the third inning, the third of four strikeouts for the three-time Cy Young Award winner. Scherzer, the active strikeouts leader, passed Hall of Fame knuckleballer Phil Niekro for 11th place.

That also was the start of 42-pitch inning for Scherzer, who finished with a season-high four walks in 3 2/3 innings. Milwaukee, which has won three games started by Scherzer this year, scored its first run when Scherzer hit Willy Adames on the helmet with a fastball. Five pitches later, Scherzer walked Rowdy Tellez on a 3-1 fastball that just missed low and outside.

Consecutive two-out doubles by Taylor and Christian Yelich in the fourth made it 3-1, and chased Scherzer after 99 pitches.

Texas has lost six of 10 games but remained 2 1/2 games ahead of second-place Houston in the AL West. The defending champions were swept at home by Seattle this weekend.

After wrapping up their 6-3 trip, the Brewers get a day off before hosting AL Central leader Minnesota on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Blue Jays bombed the Reds 10-3, the Twins shutout the Pirates 2-0, the Cardinals over the Mets 7-3 and the Cubs nipped the Royals 4-3.  The Brewers lead the Cubs by 3 games and the Reds by 4 in the division.

In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at Cedar Rapids 4-1.  There are no games scheduled in the Midwest League Monday.

New England’s preseason game with the Green Bay Packers was suspended on Saturday night after Patriots rookie cornerback Isaiah Bolden was carted off the field early in the fourth quarter.

Bolden, a seventh-round pick from Jackson State, appeared to collide with teammate Calvin Munson while attempting to make a hit on a pass completion to Green Bay’s Malik Heath. As medical officials treated Bolden, both teams left their respective sidelines and got on the field, with some players getting on one knee.

After Bolden was carted off the field, the two teams conferred and decided not to continue the game. The game stopped with the Patriots leading 21-17 with 10:29 left in the fourth quarter.

Before Bolden’s injury, New England’s Mac Jones made his first appearance of the preseason before Bailey Zappe took over and rallied the Patriots to the lead.

Jones went 6 of 9 for 52 yards in three series, including an 18-yard touchdown drive after a Packers turnover. Jones didn’t play last week when the Patriots opened the preseason with a 20-9 loss to the Houston Texans.

Zappe was 10 of 22 for 117 yards with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Kayshon Boutte. Zappe ended the third quarter with a 6-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-2 play.

Green Bay’s Jordan Love threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to rookie second-round pick Jayden Reed on his third and final series of the game.

Love went 5 of 8 for 83 yards and also had two carries for 11 yards as he continues preparing for his first season as a starter following the trade of four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets.

Green Bay’s Kingsley Enagbare sacked Jones twice. His second sack resulted in a fumble that Enagbare recovered to set up the Packers’ second touchdown. Enagbare likely would start Green Bay’s Sept. 10 opener at Chicago if the Packers don’t have outside linebacker Rashan Gary, who is coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament that ended his 2022 season.

Green Bay’s Anders Carlson kicked a 52-yard field goal with 1 second left in the first half. That represented a big boost for the rookie sixth-round pick from Auburn after he missed two extra-point attempts last week in a 36-19 victory at Cincinnati.

The Packers are planning for Carlson to take over for Mason Crosby, the franchise’s career leading scorer. Crosby, who had been Green Bay’s kicker since 2007, remains a free agent.

The Packers close out the preseason Saturday, hosting the Seattle Seahawks.  Kickoff is at noon.

Patriots WR Tre Nixon left with a shoulder injury late in the second quarter.

Spain has won its first Women’s World Cup championship with a 1-0 victory over England.

The win for Spain in just its third World Cup appearance prevented the Lionesses — the reigning European champions — from bringing the trophy back to England for the first time since 1966.

England’s men’s team won the nation’s only World Cup that year.

Spain won on a goal from Olga Carmona in the 29th minute. The left back scored in back-to-back World Cup games for Spain, which finished with a tournament-best 18 goals in this World Cup, Carmona is just the seventh player in tournament history to score in both the semifinals and the final.
