Victor Caratini hit a tiebreaking home run off Michael Fulmer in the eighth inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers recovered from a blown three-run lead to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 Thursday and gain a split of their four-game series.

“It was a huge swing,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “It was a crazy series. Both teams came back, scored late, often. A good one for the fans.”

Milwaukee’s next six games are against NL Central-leading Cincinnati. The Brewers host the Reds this weekend, then play at Cincinannti following the All-Star break.

Cody Bellinger was 4 for 4 with three RBIs for the Cubs, finishing a triple shy of the cycle and raising his average to .298. His 12-game hitting streak matched his career best, set with the 2019 Los Angeles Dodgers. He his hitting .467 (21 for 45) with three doubles, a home run, six RBIs and 10 runs during the streak.

Milwaukee led 4-1 in the sixth inning and 5-3 in the eighth before Yan Gomes’ two-run homer off J.C. Mejía (1-0).

Caratini, who played for the Cubs from 2017-20, connected on a 1-2 changeup that Fulmer (0-5) left over the middle of the plate and drove the ball into the right-field second deck for his fifth home run this season.

Fulmer has lost six straight decisions since beating Boston for Minnesota last Aug. 30.

Mejía got his second major league win, his first since May 24, 2021, for Cleveland at Detroit.

Joel Payamps allowed a leadoff single to pinch-hitter Trey Mancini in the ninth, then got three straight outs for his third save in four chances. Chicago went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

Brewers starter Freddie Peralta gave up three runs, all earned and four hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The Brewers host the Reds tonight in the first of a three-game series.  The Reds will start left-hander Andrew Abbot (4-0, 1.21 ERA) while the Brewers will send Corbin Burnes (6-5, 4.00 ERA).  First pitch is at 7:10.

The Dock Spiders will be back in action Friday night as they take on the Pit Spitters in game two of the series. The Dock Spiders will celebrate Down Syndrome Acceptance at Herr-Baker Field on Friday night with a 2022 Draft Class card set giveaway for the first 500 fans courtesy of Real Sportscards. Plus, all fans can enjoy post-game fireworks presented by LEB Insurance Group.

The Indiana Pacers officially locked up their future Thursday, announcing they had agreed with All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton on a five-year max contract that could pay a franchise record $260 million.

Haliburton’s new deal keeps him with Indiana through 2028-29. He’s been considered the centerpiece of Indiana’s rebuild after he was acquired in a trade with Sacramento before the 2021-22 trade deadline.

Since joining the Pacers, Haliburton, who starred at Oshkosh North and who played two years at Iowa State, has averaged 19.7 points, 10.2 assists and 1.7 steals in 82 games. Last season, he scored a career-high 20.7 points and averaged a league best 10.4 assists but did not qualify for the statistical crown because he needed to play in two more games to meet the NBA’s eligibility standard of 58.

On the PGA Tour John Blixit shot -9 under to take the first round lead at the John Deere Classic.  He’s one shot ahead of Grayson Murray while six other golfers are three shots off the pace.  Blixit is looking for his first win since 2013.
