FDL MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR ATTACK ON POLICE OFFICER

Fond du Lac County Judge Laura Lavey Thursday sentenced a 46-year-old Fond du Lac man to 14 years in prison and 15 years of extended supervision on charges stemming from the attack on a Fond du Lac Police officer. In May a jury found Jayson Keniston guilty of nine of the 10 charges brought against him for the January 13th, 2022 attack. It happened when police were called to an apartment building on East Merrill Avenue where Keniston lived after a neighbor reported he was trying to break down their door. Keniston allegedly assaulted the officer in a second floor hallway. The officer suffered a broken nose, a fractured thumb, a ruptured ACL, and cuts and abrasions. District Attorney Eric Toney says, “An attack on a police officer is an attack on an entire community because officers risk their lives every day to keep us safe.”

PAVEMENT BUCKLES NEAR WAUPUN

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office says U.S. Highway 151 northbound near Waupun was closed at County Road M Thursday afternoon due to road buckling. The northbound traffic was detoured onto County Road M as necessary repairs were made. It took about three hours for the highway to reopen. The buckled roadway led to flat tires for several vehicles.  The Wisconsin DOT says pavement buckling can occur with very hot temperatures that cause slabs of pavement to push against each other.  If the pressure becomes great enough, the pavement can buckle and create unexpected bumps or dips. The DOT recommends slowing down, buckling up and focusing your full attention on the roadway. Watch for slowing traffic and be ready to move over for all roadside workers, including highway crews as they repair damaged pavement.

SWIM ADVISORY ISSUED

A Swim Advisory has been issued for the beach at the Green Lake Conference Center on Big Green Lake in Green Lake County. County Health Department officials say water in that area has tested positive for high levels of E.coli bacteria. E.coli bacteria is a type of fecal coliform bacteria found in animal and human waste that is a health hazard. The Green Lake Sanitary District will re-sample the beach and give an update as results become available.

EAA ECONOMIC IMPACT

The buzz of airplanes over head during EAA AirVenture is a welcome sound for business in the area. Winnebago County Supervisor Jacob Floam says for a five-county area including Winnebago, Fond du Lac, Outagamie, Brown, and Calumet counties there’s an economic windfall. It is estimated the economic impact exceeds $200 million for the 7 days of AirVenture. Floam is an aviation enthusiast so he has several reasons for welcoming the aviation convention and fly-in each year.  He notes you have over 10,000 aircraft flying in and over 600,000 people attending AirVenture and those folks aren’t just spending their money on EAA grounds at Wittman Regional Airport. The 70th Anniversary of AirVenture wraps up this weekend in Oshkosh.

HOT CAR NO NO

Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says many cars now remind you that you have something in the back seat when you are getting out of the vehicle which should serve as a reminder not to leave a child or pet in a hot car with the windows up. She says if air-conditioning is running that’s another story, but it is extremely dangerous if it is not. Earlier this week she saw a dog left in a car with the windows up. She says if you leave a child in the car they may be able to scream but a lot of people ignore barking dogs. On an 80 degree day, the temperature inside a car can reach 100 degrees in less than 10 minutes and even quicker if the air temperature is in the mid-80s to low 90s.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATES INCREASE IN JUNE

Unemployment rates for most area counties jumped nearly a full percentage point in June, but still remained under 4 percent. According to Federal Labor statistics in Dodge County the jobless rate at the end of June was 3.1 percent, it was 3.2 percent in Fond du Lac County, and 3.3 percent in Winnebago County. The rate for Waupaca County increased to 3.4 percent; it was 3.7 percent in Waushara County, and 3.9 percent in Green Lake County. The unemployment rates in the cities of Oshkosh and Fond du Lac were at 3.5 and 3.7 percent respectively last month.  All 72 counties in the state saw an increase in their jobless rates for June, but rates were comparable to June of 2022.

GRAPPLING WITH GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP BEING OFFERED IN FDL

SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac is starting a grief support program next Tuesday. Psychotherapists Ed Kartheiser and Donna Glissendorf will coordinate the “Grappling with Grief” support program in the Journeys Center of the hospital Tuesday afternoons from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. Kartheiser says there are 5 stages of grief; shock, anger, bargaining, depression, and ultimately acceptance but everyone handles grief differently. Glissendorf says not everyone shows outward signs of grief so it is impossible to known if someone is experiencing it. Kartheiser says they’ve found that support programs can be helpful because they let people know they aren’t going through it alone and sometimes group members can have helpful suggestions. Glissendorf says they are hoping to start similar support groups in Ripon and Waupun. To attend the group in Fond du Lac pre-registration is required by calling Olivia at 920-926-4221.
