WILD ROSE MAN HURT IN FDL COUNTY MOTORCYCLE CRASH
Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials say speed and alcohol were factors in a single motorcycle crash on State Highway 23, west of Pit Road in the Town of Forest last night. Before first responders arrived, Good Samaritans stopped to provide first aid to the motorcyclist a 36-year-old Wild Rose man. ThedaStar helicopter flew him to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered significant injuries. Investigators say he was heading west on State Highway 23 when he traveled onto the gravel median shoulder. He began to lose control on the shoulder before traveling down into the median. He was then thrown from his motorcycle coming to rest in the median. He was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated-first offense.
AIRCRAFT CRASH NEAR EAA GROUNDS
The FAA is investigating an aircraft crash near EAA AirVenture. A single-engine Heath V-Strut crashed about 7:45 Tuesday morning. It went down east of the north-south runway, east of Wittman Regional Airport. A National Transportation Safety Board official says the plane lost power after it took off to the south. It crash-landed on its left wing in a field and ended up inverted. The pilot was the only person on board and was taken by a friend to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The plane is registered to an owner in southwestern Wisconsin.
SPEED ENFORCEMENT DAY TODAY
About 100 law enforcement agencies, including the Wisconsin State Patrol, will join officers from 11 states across the Midwest to step up patrols for Speed Enforcement Day today. The campaign is a 24-hour, high-visibility enforcement effort involving state, county and local law enforcement agencies. The State Patrol will have all available officers working statewide to stop drivers who are endangering safety on the roads. The goal is to educate the community on the dangers of speeding and save lives. Last year 162 people were killed and more than 6,500 were hurt in speed-related crashes. Speeding is a continued challenge across the nation and in Wisconsin. The number of 100+ mile an hour citations issued by the State Patrol rose sharply during the pandemic, from 583 citations in 2019 to 1,403 citations in 2020. State Patrol officers issued 1,159 100+ miles an hour citations in 2022. (Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s photo of traffic stop on Interstate 41 Tuesday).
RIPON COMMON COUNCIL NOTES
The Ripon Common Council last night approved a pay plan for city employees. For budget purposes the Council had to set some numbers for pay increases for the 2024 City Budget. The cost of living adjustment will not exceed 3 percent and performance-based raises will be done on a case-by-case basis not to exceed 2 percent. The City is hoping the adjustments will make it more competitive in the retention and attraction of city employees. The Council also approved the acceptance of a Carbon Reduction Program Grant of $36,191 from the state to LED retrofit 67 street lights in the city. The overall cost of the project is $45,239 with an 80/20 percent split in costs between the state and city the city’s share being $9,048. The more efficient LED lighting is expected to save the city money. The Council also approved an occupancy permit and agreement with Alliance Laundry Services for the company’s reconstruction of a parking lot on Shepard Street.
HEAT SAFETY TIPS
With excessive heat expected Thursday and Friday Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller has some safety advice. She recommends staying out of the heat if possible and if you don’t have air conditioning go to a place like a public library or grocery store to cool down during the day. You can also cool down through a cool shower or bath. Mueller says it is important to be well hydrated, otherwise you could fall prey to heat exhaustion or stroke. She stresses if you do work outdoors and sweat profusely make sure you replace that salt with a sports drink or something containing salt or sodium. Other tips include wearing light-colored light weight clothing, use sunscreen, check on loved ones and elderly neighbors, eat lightly, and never leave a child or pet in a hot car. It is also a good idea to monitor the news and weather for any heat advisory or warnings.

CEDAR RIDGE SESSIONS MOVED
Officials at the Thrasher Opera House considered the comfort of the performers, their guests, and staff in deciding to move the Cedar Ridge Sessions indoors to the Thrasher in Green Lake this Thursday through Saturday. Given the forecasted excessive heat and potential for storm activity it was an easy decision. Jason Mansmith of Thrasher says they would have liked to hold it outdoors. The event will now feature cocktail table-style seating and a dance floor, and guests can purchase cheese trays and champagne to enjoy during the evening or can bring picnic-style snacks to enjoy. However, no carry-in beverages as a bar will be available for guests. This year’s performers will include folk artists Adrian + Meredith on Thursday, Dig Deep on Friday, and the Foxgloves on Saturday. Tickets for the Cedar Ridge Sessions are $35 per night or $90 for all three nights and are available at the Thrasher website or by calling 920-294-4279.
AIRVENTURE AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
People from all over the world gather at the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh to celebrate their love of aviation. Victor Briones knows that first hand. He is co-chairperson of the International tent. Victor is originally from Chile in South America and moved to the U.S. 53 years ago. He says one day 32 years ago a new neighbor asked him if he would help out with translating at the International tent and he has returned every year since for AirVenture. Victor says given that people from about 90 different countries attend the annual convention and fly-in they have people that speak well over a hundred different languages working in the tent. He says friendships are made and rekindled every year at EAA, which they see through cards, letters and postcards they receive throughout the year. Victor used to fly but no longer can but still enjoys the experience he gets through AirVenture.
