7/18/23 Hometown Broadcasting Sports Tuesday

18 July 2023 Sports

After an off-day the Brewers are back in action tonight in Philadelphia.  Milwaukee is coming off a three-game sweep of the Reds.  The Brewers lead the Reds by two games in the Central Division.

Brewer RHP Julio Teheran (2-3, 3.64) starts Tuesday’s series opener at Philadelphia and RHP Aaron Nola (8-6, 4.39).  First pitch is at 5:40 CDT.

Elsewhere in the Central on Monday the Reds and the Giants game in Cincinnati was suspended in the 8th inning because of rain.  In other games the Indians pounded the Pirates 11-0, the Nationals downed the Cubs 7-5 and the Cardinals beat the Marlins 6-4.

There were no games Monday in the Midwest League.  Tonight the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are at Dayton.  First pitch is at 6:05 CDT.

In the Northwood’s League Shortstop Jack Gorman (Presbyterian)) hit his second home of the game in the top of the ninth to give the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders a 4-3 victory over the Mallards.

The Dock Spiders will be back in action tonight at Simmons Field as they take on the Kenosha Kingfish. First pitch is slated for 6:35 PM.

Milwaukee Brewers left-handed pitcher Wade Miley has gone back on the injured list due to discomfort in his throwing elbow.

The NL Central-leading Brewers made the move Monday, the night before opening a three-game series at Philadelphia. The move is retroactive to Friday.

The Brewers will announce a corresponding move Tuesday. Miley has gone 6-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 13 appearances this season despite missing a month of action from mid-May to mid-June with a left lat strain. Miley’s five starts since his return from the injured list had included three scoreless appearances.

In his last start, Miley struck out eight and allowed four hits and three walks in six shutout innings as the Brewers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 on July 9, the day before the All-Star break.

The 36-year-old Miley joined the Brewers this offseason on a one-year, $4.5 million contract that included a possible $1.5 million in incentives and a $10 million mutual option for 2024.

That followed a 2022 season in which Miley went 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA in just nine appearances for the Chicago Cubs. Miley missed the start of last season with elbow inflammation and missed time with a strained throwing shoulder later that year.

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed their top two draft picks from the 2023 draft: infielder Brock Wilken, who they selected 18th overall, and right-handed pitcher Josh Knoth who they took 33rd overall.

Wilken hit .345 (82-for-238) with 15 doubles, 31 HR and 82 RBI in 66 games as a junior at Wake Forest in 2023. He holds the ACC career record for home runs with 71 while his 31 HR this season set a school record. Wilken was named Second Team All-ACC in 2023 after leading the conference in HR (31), walks (69), runs (90), slugging percentage (.807) and total bases (192) and ranking second in RBI (82) and third in on-base percentage (.506).

The 21-year-old was named First Team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association, Second Team All-American by Baseball America and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and Third Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

Knoth was named a Second Team High School All-American by Baseball America following his senior season in 2023 during which he set school records for ERA (0.17) and strikeouts (109).

Isiah Mobley had 28 points and 11 rebounds, and the Cleveland Cavaliers captured the NBA 2K24 Summer League championship with a 99-78 victory Monday over the Houston Rockets..

This was the Cavaliers’ first title since the summer league went to a tournament format in 2013. Mobley was voted game MVP, more than making up for not being selected to the all-tournament team.

Sam Merrill scored 27 points, making 6 of 12 3-pointers, and Emoni Bates added 19 points for the Cavaliers (6-0).

Nate Hinton led Houston (5-1) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Three other Rockets also scored in double figures: Cam Whitmore (14), Trevor Hudgins (13) and Fletcher Magee (10). Whitmore was chosen tournament MVP.
