OSHKOSH OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING JUSTIFIED

The Winnebago County District Attorney’s Office has determined that an Oshkosh Police Officer’s use of force during a shooting on June 29th was justified. The officer shot 34-year-old Benson Thao of Oshkosh with a rifle in the area near the Mill Street boat launch. Police got a call that morning about a man carrying a loaded rifle. When officers found Thao he was still carrying the rifle. They tried to deescalate the situation but he refused to put the rifle down. Officers tried to use less lethal rounds but he continued to hold the rifle. When Thao began to raise the rifle and point it at Officers the officer fired his rifle striking Thao once. Thao was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. After review, Winnebago County District Attorney Eric Sparr found Thao presented a significant risk to the life and safety of the officer. Last week the DA’s office charged Thao with first degree recklessly endangering safety. During his initial court appearance Bond was set at $50,000 cash and he will be back in court on July 24th

GROTHMAN AMENDMENT IN NDAA

Congressman Glenn Grothman had an amendment included in the National Defense Appropriation Act of 2024 that strips funding from Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion bureaucrats within the Department of Defense. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says the proposed head of the Joint Chiefs doesn’t want more than 42 percent of new officers to be white. He says we do not need DEI training or bureaucrats educating people how racist our society is.” Grothman says President Biden’s Labor Secretary is also promoting a hiring agenda based on race. The authorization bill also includes language to fire “diversity officers,” outlaw race and gender quotas in the military recruitment process and ban Critical Race Theory at West Point, among other targeted initiatives to eliminate DEI from the government.

WARDING OFF WEST NILE VIRUS

Every year Wisconsin sees cases of West Nile virus in humans and recently a horse in Dunn County was infected. West Nile virus is a mosquito borne illness. Fond du Lac County Health Educator Raine Bleecker says you can reduce the mosquito population in your own yard by removing anything that collects water or allows it to stand. That includes removing tires, getting rid of water on air conditioning units, cover trash and recyclable containers with tight-fitting lids, and making sure you drain flower pot dishes every few days. She says leaves will collect water so make sure your gutters and down spouts aren’t clogged with leaves. If you have a tire swing make sure it has a hole in it to drain water. Bird baths and pet dishes should have their water replaced at least once a week. Bleecker says if you use a mosquito repellant make sure it has 20 to 30 percent DEET in it and you should apply it yourself to your kids. You can also wear long-sleeved pants and shirts and closed shoes.
