Stuart Fairchild and Tyler Stephenson hit solo home runs and Andrew Abbott threw six scoreless innings in his major league debut, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 2-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.
The struggling Reds (27-33) turned to Abbott, their top pitching prospect, to help the club avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Brewers (32-28), and it worked. Abbott, a 2021 second-round draft pick from the University of Virginia, allowed just one hit, walked four and struck out six. The 24-year-old left-hander threw 105 pitches.
Abbott took 28 pitches to get out of the first inning before settling down and getting out of the frame unscathed after walking one and striking out another. Abbott allowed his only hit of the game in the fifth, when Joey Wiemer doubled to left.
Fairchild scored the first run of the game in the third inning, sending an 0-2 pitch from Brewers starter Julio Teheran (1-2, 1.56 ERA) 395 feet to left field for his second home run of the season.
Cincinnati carried the 1-0 lead and Abbott took a no-hitter into the fourth. That’s when Stephenson doubled the Reds’ output with his third homer of the year, a 363-foot shot to right-center.
Abbott got out of the sixth after striking out 2018 NL MVP Christian Yelich and then was pulled. Four of his six strikeouts came on a fastball. The others came via his curveball.
Cincinnati relievers Buck Farmer and Lucas Sims and closer Alexis Diaz completed the combined three-hitter. Diaz picked up his 14th save.
Wiemer had two of the Brewers’ hits, while Owen Miller accounted for the other.
Milwaukee returns home Tuesday for the start of a three-game set against the Baltimore Orioles. RHP Freddy Peralta (5-5, 4.62 ERA) is to start for the Brewers, while RHP Kyle Gibson (7-3, 3.89 ERA) will take the mound for the Orioles. First pitch is at 6:40.
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Monday the Pirates nipped the A’s 5-4, the Rangers slipped past the Cardinals 4-3 and the Padres shutout the Cubs 5-0. Pittsburgh moved into first place in the division, a half-game ahead of Milwaukee. The Reds are 5 games out, the Cubs 6 and the Cardinals 8 games behind.
There were no games Monday in the Midwest League. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are at West Michigan tonight with the first pitch set for 5:35 CDT.
The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders won at Wausau Monday over the Woodchucks 7-6, snapping a 2-game losing streak. The victory also stopped a 6-game winning streak for the Woodchucks. Fond du Lac is back in action tonight in Green Bay versus the Green Bay Rockers. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM.
Adrian Griffin is getting his first head coaching job at the same place where he started out as an assistant.
The Milwaukee Bucks officially announced Monday they have hired Griffin to replace Mike Budenholzer, who was fired last month after a first-round playoff loss to the Miami Heat. Reports surfaced on April 29 that the Bucks were finalizing an agreement to make Griffin their next coach. An introductory news conference is scheduled for Tuesday.
Griffin has spent the last five seasons as a Toronto Raptors assistant on a staff headed by Nick Nurse, who was fired after the season and has since been hired as the Philadelphia 76ers’ head coach. Griffin’s coaching career began during a stint as a Bucks assistant on Scott Skiles’ staff from 2008-10.
The 48-year-old Griffin began his first Milwaukee coaching stint after ending a nine-year NBA playing career that included stops with the Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets. Chicago Bulls and Seattle SuperSonics.
He also was an assistant with the Chicago Bulls (2010-15), Orlando Magic (2015-16) and Oklahoma City Thunder (2016-18) before joining Toronto’s staff.
Griffin faces the challenge of replacing a coach who led the Bucks to their first title in half a century.
Budenholzer coached the Bucks to a league-best 271-120 regular-season record in his five seasons and coached the 2020-21 Bucks to an NBA championship, their first since 1971.
The Bucks made the coaching change because their postseason fortunes hadn’t matched their regular-season success for most of Budenholzer’s tenure. Milwaukee had the NBA’s best regular-season record three of Budenholzer’s five seasons but didn’t make it beyond the Eastern Conference finals in any of those three years.
The Bucks blew a 2-0 lead and lost 4-2 in the 2019 Eastern Conference finals to the eventual NBA champion Raptors during Griffin’s first season in Toronto. The Bucks fell 4-1 to Miami in the second round of the 2020 playoffs in the Walt Disney World postseason bubble.
This year, the Bucks lost 4-1 to Miami in the first round after going 58-24 in the regular season. They were just the sixth No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 8 seed in the opening round, and the only No. 1 seed that failed to win more than one playoff game.
In game-two of the Stanley Cup Finals Monday night the Las Vegas Golden Knights scored four straight goals on way to a 7-2 victory over the Florida Panthers and a 2-0 lead. The series shifts to Florida Thursday for games 3 and 4.
