From Wayne Mausser:
Christian Yelich had three hits and two RBIs, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-2 win over the New York Mets on Wednesday night, hours after Mets owner Steve Cohen held a press conference in which he preached patience but said his struggling team is running out of time to get back into the playoff race.
The $355 million Mets are 36-44 and have lost 17 of 23. They were 8 1/2 games out of the last NL wild-card spot entering Wednesday. New York hasn’t won a series since sweeping Philadelphia from May 30 through June 1. The Mets went 0 for 11 with runners on base and stranded seven.
Manager Buck Showalter, whose job was deemed safe for the rest of the season by Cohen, was ejected after Yelich’s two-run single in the eighth inning, which came after Joey Wiemer was awarded first base when he was hit by a pitch while swinging at the ball.
Jesse Winker had a two-run double in the first, and Blake Perkins delivered a go-ahead single in the sixth off Grant Hartwig (0-1).
Tommy Pham homered for the Mets and went 3 for 3 with a walk. Francisco Álvarez drew a bases-loaded walk that tied it 2-all in the fourth, but then Brett Baty struck out and Mark Canha grounded sharply into an inning-ending double play.
Bryse Wilson (3-0) allowed two hits over 1 2/3 innings. Devin Williams earned his 15th save by striking out two in a perfect ninth.
Brewers starter Wade Miley gave up two runs in four innings. Mets starter Kodai Senga allowed two runs and struck out eight in five innings.
The teams close out the four-game series Thursday night, when Mets RHP Max Scherzer (7-2, 3.95 ERA) opposes Adrian Houser (2-2, 4.02). Scherzer has allowed three runs over 14 innings in winning his last two starts. Houser will be making his first start since June 9. First pitch is at 6:10.
Meanwhile RHP Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) threw 25 pitches Tuesday in a bullpen session — his second since he was injured April 7. Elsewhere In the NL Central on Wednesday the Reds beat the Orioles 11-7, the Pirates over the Padres 7-1, the Astros beat the Cardinals 10-7 and the Phillies downed the Cubs 8-5. The Brewers remain a half-game behind the Reds, the Cubs are 4 ½ out, the Pirates 5 and the Cardinals are 9 games out.
Domingo German authored a perfect game against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night, as the New York Yankees starter allowed no hits and no walks on 99 pitches in an 11-0 victory.
In the Midwest League Wednesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at Quad Cities 11-4 to improve to 29-39. The teams play again tonight with the first pitch at 6:30.
In the Northwood’s League the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders were off Wednesday but return to action tonight against the Madison Mallards with the first pitch set for 6:35.
The U.S. Senior Open gets underway today at Sentry World in Stevens Point with Wisconsin natives Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly among the favorites. Kelly is looking for his first U.S. Senior Open title while Stricker is hoping to win his second.
Stricker has momentum on his side having won the last two senior major championships and three of the last seven. And in 2023 he also won four titles on the PGA Champions Tour. Padraig Harrington was last years title.
The Wisconsin Herd, NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, acquired the player rights to Hassane Gueye in the first-ever NBA G League International Draft.
Gueye, a 6-10 forward, most recently played for the Alliance Sport Alsace in the France LNB Pro B League. Prior to the 2022-23 season, the Senegal native played two years for the Espoirs Pau-Lacg-Orthez in the LNB Espoirs League.
This was the first year the NBA G League hosted an International Draft. The draft consisted of one round with ten players from ten different countries that were eligible to be drafted. All players are NBA Draft-eligible prospects, with the ability to declare for the NBA Draft ranging in time from 2024 through 2026.
The Milwaukee Bucks have completed their assistant coaching staff by hiring Terry Stotts, Joe Prunty, Patrick Mutombo, DJ Bakker and Nate Mitchell, retaining Vin Baker and Josh Oppenheimer, and promoting Sidney Dobner. Dobner becomes the first female assistant coach in Bucks history
Connor Bedard can finally appreciate looking forward to playing for the Chicago Blackhawks after spending the past few months avoiding the subject.
And the Blackhawks — and their fans who began chanting “Let’s go, Hawks!” in Music City after Bedard was selected with the first pick in the NHL draft on Wednesday night — can begin looking forward to a new era with a highly skilled offensive forward who’s drawn comparisons to Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby.
Bedard became the second No. 1 pick in Blackhawks history, joining Patrick Kane, who went first overall in 2007 and helped form the core of a team that won three Stanley Cups from 2010 to 2015. Kane’s tenure in Chicago ended in February when he was traded to the New York Rangers.
