Zac Gallen pitched seven strong innings for his ninth win and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 on Wednesday.

Arizona won for only the fourth time in its last 18 games in Milwaukee, but took two of three from the Brewers in the series.

Gallen (9-2) limited the Brewers to one run and three hits. He walked one and struck out four. He is tied with three other pitchers for the NL lead in wins and remains among the leaders in strikeouts and ERA. He allowed a solo home run to Raimel Tapia in the fifth inning and otherwise kept the Brewers in check.

Despite his stellar showing overall this season, Gallen had struggled on the road, carrying a 1-2 recorith a 5.79 ERA in seven starts coming in. He is 7-0 with a 1.00 ERA in eight home starts.

The NL West-leading Diamondbacks broke through in the sixth against Brewers reliever Elvis Peguero (1-1). Pavin Smith walked with one out and scored to tie it when center fielder Joey Wiemer failed to cleanly field Emmanuel Rivera’s sharply hit single up the middle. Rivera scored on Alek Thomas’ line-drive single to right to give Arizona a 2-1 lead.

The Diamondbacks added to their lead in the eighth on Gabriel Moreno’s run-scoring double off Trevor Megill. Moreno came around to score on Geraldo Perdomo’s base hit to push the margin to 4-1. Rivera’s RBI single in the eighth gave Arizona a four-run cushion.

The home run by Tapia, who signed with the Brewers last week after being released by Boston, broke a scoreless tie. Tapia is 10 for 18 in his career against Gallen. The homer was Tapia’s first hit with the Brewers after a 0-for-11 start. It was his first homer since April 8 against Detroit.

The Brewers fell to 1 1/2 games behind Cincinnati in the NL Central after the Reds came from behind to beat the Rockies on Wednesday for their 11th consecutive win.

Milwaukee starter Julio Teheran continued his resurgence after a more than two-year absence from the major leagues, giving up just two hits in five scoreless innings. Teheran has worked at least five innings and allowed two or fewer runs in six straight starts, the second longest active streak in the majors. The Brewers are off today.  LHP Wade Miley (4-2, 3.28) gets the start in the opener of three-game series against Cleveland on Friday. Miley threw a no-hitter as a member of the Reds in his last outing against the Guardians in Cleveland on May 7, 2021. He will be opposed by RHP Shane Bieber (5-4, 3.51).

Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday the Reds beat the Rockies 5-3, their 11th straight win and longest winning streak since 1957.  In other games the Cubs downed the Pirates 8-3 and the Nationals Shutout the Cardinals 3-0.   The Brewers trail the Reds by 1 ½ games, the Cubs are 3 ½ out, the Pirates 5 games out and the Cardinals are 9 games behind.

In the Midwest League Wednesday Lansing beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7-1 at Fox Cities Stadium.   The  T-Rats fall to 26-37.  The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:40.

In Northwood’s League action the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders swept a doubleheader against the Lakeshore Chinooks, 6-5 and  6-3.  The Dock Spiders have won three straight and have moved out of the sixth spot in the Great Lakes West Division as they now sit at 9-15 on the season and will look for their fourth straight win on Thursday night at home against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. First pitch is slated for 6:35 P.M.

Three-time All-Star forward Khris Middleton has declined his $40 million player option with the Milwaukee Bucks to become a free agent, his agents Mike Lindeman and Jeff Schwartz told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

A return to the Bucks on a new deal remains a possibility.

Injuries have plagued Middleton since the 2022 playoffs, when he missed Milwaukee’s final 10 playoff games with a sprained MCL. He underwent left wrist surgery during last year’s offseason, which sidelined him for the first 20 games of the 2022-23 season.

He returned on Dec. 2, 2022, and played six of seven games before missing 18 straight with right knee soreness. Middleton, who turns 32 in August, underwent successful surgery on his right knee shortly after Milwaukee’s first-round playoff exit to address the lingering issue. He averaged nearly 24 points and 6.2 assists in that playoff series, a five-game loss to the Miami Heat.

Middleton has been with the Bucks for 10 seasons, transitioning from role player to three-time All-Star and one of the faces of the franchise alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo. He had several big playoff performances in 2021 en route to the team’s first NBA championship in 50 years.

Months after Colorado’s voters decided to join Oregon in decriminalizing psychedelic mushrooms, Denver is hosting a conference this week put on by a psychedelic advocacy group bringing together an unlikely cohort of speakers — including an NFL star, a former Republican governor and a rapper.

The conference and the thousands attending is an indication of the creep, or perhaps leap, of cultural acceptance for psychedelic substances that proponents say offer beneifts for things like post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism. Still, medical experts caution that more research is needed on the drugs’ efficacy and the extent of the risks of psychedelics, which can cause hallucinations. NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who’ll soon debut with the New York Jets after years with the Green Bay Packers, will speak with a podcaster Wednesday evening about his ayahuasca experience and how he believes it helped his game.
