Kevin Gausman pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings to win back-to-back starts for the first time this season, Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman both homered and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 on Thursday.
Gausman (4-3) struck out 11, giving him 100 on the season and reclaiming the AL lead from Angels right-hander Shohei Ohtani (90). Gausman allowed five hits and walked two. Gausman has struck out 10 or more a major-league leading five times in his 12 starts.
Erik Swanson retired all four batters he faced and Jordan Romano finished for his 13th save in 16 chances.
The Brewers have lost five of seven.
Bichette and Chapman both connected off Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta (5-5) in a three-run first inning as Toronto opened June on a winning note after going 11-17 in May.
Bichette got it started with a solo drive to center, his team-leading 12th. Three batters later, Chapman hit a two-run blast, his eighth.
Blue Jays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier made a sensational diving catch on the warning track for the final out of the second inning, laying out for Andruw Monasterio’s deep drive. Backing up the play, right fielder George Springer raised his arms in celebration at the highlight reel catch by the three-time Gold Glove award winner.
After giving up a leadoff double in the second, Peralta retired the next nine batters in order. He set down 14 of the final 16 batters he faced.
Blue Jays batters didn’t strike out, walk, or hit a home run in Wednesday’s 4-2 loss, just the third time in team history that’s happened, and the first since 1979. In contrast, Toronto did all three in the first inning Thursday. After Bichette and Chapman homered, Cavan Biggio drew a two-out walk but Kiermaier struck out to end the inning.
Brewers RHP Corbin Burnes (4-4, 3.68) starts Friday as Milwaukee opens a three-game series at Cincinnati. LHP Brandon Williamson (0-0, 5.02) starts for the Reds. First pitch is at 4:10 CDT.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday there was just one game as the Red Sox beat the Reds 8-2. The Brewers lead over the Pirates is down to a half-game in the division. The Reds are 3 games back, while the Cardinals and Cubs are 4 ½ games behind.
In the Midwest League Thursday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost to Peoria 3-2 at Fox Cities Stadium. The teams are back in action tonight with the first pitch at 6:40.
For the fourth straight game the Dock Spiders fall short of a comeback as the Mallards win 6-5 on Thursday afternoon at Herr-Baker Field in Fond du Lac.
Mallards RHP Kevin Fee (Purdue Fort Wayne picked up the win. Dock Spiders LHP Zachary Gaudreau is tagged with the loss. The Dock Spiders will be back in action at home tonight at 6:35 PM CT as they take on the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. After winning last Sunday 94-73 over Japan, the Wisconsin Glo are back in action Saturday night hosting Flint. Tipoff is at 7:00 at the Oshkosh Arena.
The NBA Finals got underway last night in Denver as the Nuggets beat the Miami Heat 104-93. Nikola Jokic led the Nuggets with 27 points including 12 in the fourth quarter and Jamal Murray scored 26 points. Jokic also had 14 assists and 10 rebounds. Bam Adebayo led the Heat with 26. Game two is Sunday night in Denver.
Six softball teams from Northeastern Wisconsin are advancing to the state softball tournament in Madison next week, including two-time defending D1 state champions Kaukauna, who ran its win streak to 78 games in the sectional finals against Green Bay Preble.
Elsewhere in division 1, Oshkosh West is back to state after surviving in extra innings 2-1 over Watertown in 8 innings.
In division two, both New London and Freedom, who squared off in a state semifinal last year, are heading back to Goodman Diamond.
The Bulldogs scored 11 runs in the third inning, thanks to a pair of grand slams, in the 13-3 win in 6 innings over Rice Lake.
The Irish of Freedom knocked off Waupun 9-1.
After winning the state title in division 4 in 2021, Mishicot is up a division in D3 and is state-bound after shutting out top-seeded and previously unbeaten Peshtigo 6-nothing.
One Wautoma Hornets golfer qualified for the state golf tournament. He is Trey Riley. The team finished third and missed team state by four strokes.

Ava Stahl was also named Player of the Year.
The following Wautoma Hornets athletes earned all-conference in girls soccer.
- On the 1st team All-Conference it was Sabrina Adair
- On the 2nd team All-Conference it was Dana Godinez
- Honorable mention went to Emily Pena
Mason Crosby, longtime kicker for the Green Bay Packers and now a free agent, has sold his Green Bay home.
Online Brown County land records show Crosby sold his 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom home for $1,350,000 on May 26.
Mason Crosby, the Packers’ all-time leading scorer, became a free agent at the end of 2022 season. The Packers drafted Anders Carlson in the sixth round of this year’s NFL Draft.
Crosby holds Green Bay franchise records in points (1,918), field goals (395) and extra points (733). He began his NFL career in 2007.
