If only the Oakland Athletics played in the NL Central, they might not be on pace to have one of the worst seasons in modern history.
Seth Brown and Brent Rooker hit back-to-back homers in the fourth inning to help the Athletics complete their first series sweep of the season with an 8-6 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
Kevin Smith also homered as the A’s erased an early 2-0 deficit. Since falling 5-4 at Pittsburgh on Monday for their 15th straight road loss, Oakland has gone 5-0 on the road against the NL Central’s top two teams — the Pirates and Brewers.
This marks the first time the A’s have won five straight games within the same season since September 2021. This surge gives the Athletics (17-50) a higher winning percentage than the 1962 New York Mets, who went 40-120 for the worst season-ending record of any team since the start of the 20th century.
Christian Yelich homered for the Brewers, who have lost four straight.
Milwaukee’s loss and Pittsburgh’s 2-1 victory over the New York Mets caused the Brewers to fall a game behind the Pirates in the NL Central.
Oakland trailed 2-0 before before scoring four runs in the fourth off Freddy Peralta (5-6). Brown capped an 11-pitch at-bat with a three-run homer over the right-field wall to put the A’s ahead for good.
Rooker followed that up by launching a 1-1 pitch into the left-field seats.
Milwaukee threatened to tie or pull back ahead on a few occasions.
The Brewers left the tying run on third in the sixth. They trailed 5-3 but had two on with two outs in the eighth when Rowdy Tellez hit a drive that Esteury Ruiz caught at the center-field warning track.
Oakland scored three runs in the ninth to extend its lead to 8-3, but the A’s bullpen struggled to close the deal. Trevor May got pulled in favor of Sam Long after walking Victor Caratini with the bases loaded and two outs.
Pinch-hitter Abraham Toro’s bloop single made it 8-6 and put the tying run on first before Blake Perkins bounced to third to complete the sweep. Long got his second save in as many opportunities.
Oakland’s JP Sears (1-3) struck out five and allowed six hits and two runs in five innings. Peralta struck out five and gave up four runs, three hits and two walks in five innings.
The Brewers are off Monday before starting a two-game series at Minnesota on Tuesday. Scheduled starters are Brewers RHP Corbin Burnes (5-4, 3.36) and Twins RHP Pablo López (3-3, 4.25).
Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Pirates edged the Mets 2-1, the Reds nipped the Cardinals 4-3 and the Giants pounded the Cubs 13-3. The Brewers trail the Pirates by a game in the division while the Reds are 4 out.
In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers game game at West Michigan was cancelled. There are no games in the Midwest League today.

Steve Stricker’s latest win on the PGA Tour Champions felt as big as any in his career, closing with a 3-under 69 on Sunday to win his American Family Insurance Championship in his native Wisconsin for his fourth title this year. The tournament helped raise money for charity.
Stricker already has six Champions majors, including the two played this year. This tournament was one his foundation began before he turned 50, and he finally got it.
Tied with Paul Broadhurst to start the final round, Stricker seized control with two straight birdies to close out the front nine at University Ridge Golf Club.
He won by five shots over Broadhurst (74) and Steve Alker (70). His other big win in Wisconsin was as Ryder Cup captain two years ago at Whistling Straits, when the Americans beat Europe by a record margin.
Stricker now has 15 wins on the PGA Champions, and he gets another crack before the home crowd in the U.S. Senior Open at SentryWorld in Stevens Point.
Stricker lost in a playoff at the American Family Insurance Championship in 2019.
Stricker expanded his lead in the Charles Schwab Cup. Led by his four wins, he has not finished worse than a tie for eighth in his 11 tournaments on the PGA Tour Champions this year.
On the regular PGA Tour Sunday Canadian Nick Taylor became the first Canadian in 69 years to win the Canadian Open in dramatic fashion. Taylor hold a 72 foot eagle putt on the fourth hole of a playoff against Tommy Fleetwood for the RBC Canadian Open title.
Novac Djokovic earned his men’s-record 23rd Grand Slam singles championship Sunday, breaking a tie with Raphael Nadal and moving three in front of the retired Federer, with a 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5 victory over Casper Ruud of Norway for most of its 3 hours, 13 minutes.
Djokovic puts this one alongside the French Open titles he earned in 2016 and 2021, making him the only man with at least three from each major. He won his very first at the 2008 Australian Open and now possesses a total of 10 trophies from there, seven from Wimbledon and three from the U.S. Open.
Also worth noting: He again is halfway to a calendar-year Grand Slam — winning all four majors in one season — something no man has achieved since Rod Laver in 1969. Djokovic came close in 2021, when he won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon and made it all the way to the title match at the U.S. Open before losing to Daniil Medvedev.
Djokovic will resume that pursuit at Wimbledon, which begins on the grass of the All England Club on July 3.

In Division 4, Iola Scandinavia bringing home the title for the first time in program history. They beat Waterloo 10-6.
Oakfield fell to Pacelli in the D5 championship, 9-6.
Jena Antonucci turned a Triple Crown marred by thoroughbred deaths on the track and threatened by bad air quality from wildfires in Canada into a celebration for racing and women.
Arcangelo took the lead at the top of the stretch and won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, making the 47-year-old Antonucci the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race.
Antonucci and Arcangelo did everything right as the 3-year-old son of Arrogate finished the 1 1/2-mile race in 2:29.23 and by 1 1/2 lengths in front of favored Forte, with Tapit Trice third.
