Thursday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

The Brewers lost 7-1 on Wednesday at Coors Field, where southpaws Kyle Freeland and Brent Suter combined to hold Milwaukee scoreless on four singles over the first six innings. As a result, the Rockies have their first three-game winning streak all season.  And the Brewers have dropped three of their last four series.

Third baseman Mike Brosseau’s’s throwing error leading off the fourth inning led to four unearned runs against Brewers starter Eric Lauer, three on Alan Trejo’s bases-clearing double off Lauer’s misplaced cutter.

The Rockies tacked on two more runs in the 7th and one in the 8th before the Brewers scored their lone run in the 9th.   Milwaukee managed just five hits, two of those by Owen Miller.

Lauer (3-3) gave up four runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings.  Kyle Freeland (3-3) scattered three hits over five innings to get the win. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.

Kris Bryant hit his fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning and Charlies Blackmon hit his third home run, a solo shot in the 8th.

The Brewers are 5-4 this season in games started by opposing left-handers, but only one of those nine starting pitchers — the Angels’ Reid Detmers on April 29 — left the game with his team in a deficit. Overall, Milwaukee ranks next to last in the Majors with a .623 OPS against left-handed pitching, just a hair ahead of the Minnesota Twins. The Brewers are also next to last with a .333 slugging percentage, better only than the slumping Yankees (.320).

The two teams finish up their series this afternoon as left-hander Wade Miley (3-1) faces right-hander Connor Seabold (0-0).  First pitch is at 2:20 CDT from Coors Field.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Padres  beat the Reds 7-1, the Rays downed the Pirates 8-1, the Nationals nipped the Cubs 2-1 and Angels over the Cardinals 6-4. The Brewers still trail the Pirates by 1 ½ games in the division.

In the NBA Playoffs Wednesday night the Celtics beat the 76ers 121-87 to tie their series a game apiece.  Tonight Lakers play at the Warriors in game two of their series with the Lakers leading 1-0.

Former Packers’ wide receiver Randall Cobb is expected to sign a deal with the New York Jets.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Randall Cobb is expected to agree to a one-year deal with the New York Jets.

This move puts him back together with his long-time teammate and friend, Aaron Rodgers.

Cobb becomes the fourth ex-Packer to sign with the Jets. Along with joining Rodgers, Cobb will also be reunited with former Packers Allen Lazard, Tim Boyle and Billy Turner.

Cobb has spent most of his career with the Packers. He left in 2019 to play for the Dallas Cowboys and then played for the Houston Texans in 2020. Cobb resigned with the Packers in 2021. Cobb ranks 5th in Packers’ history with 532 career receptions.

On the Men’s PGA Tour the Wells Fargo Championship gets underway today in Charlotte, North Carolina. Max Homa will try to defend his title.  Last year he closed with a -2 under 68 for a two-shot victoy.
