5/3/23 Oakfield Man Charged for Verizon Store Crash

3 May 2023 News

The 20-year-old Oakfield man who crashed his vehicle into a Verizon Store in Fond du Lac last Thursday has been charged with nine felonies in connection with the accident including intoxicated use of a vehicle-great bodily harm and eight counts of first degree reckless endangering safety. Benjamin Ayer is also charged with two misdemeanors, possession of marijuana and operating while intoxicated causing injury-first offense. Cash bond was set at $300,000 with additional non-monetary conditions ordered. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 12th. According to the criminal complaint Ayer told an officer at the scene he was huffing air duster from a canister in the parking lot of a restaurant on Rolling Meadows Drive before heading up the road and losing control of his vehicle. It left the road north of the Walmart parking lot, traveled approximately 300 feet through parts of a terrace and the Pet Smart/Dollar Tree parking lot before jumping a curb in the Verizon parking lot and smashing through the glass walls of the store. Six people were injured. Injuries ranged from a finger cut on smashed glass to critical injuries for a 29-year-old woman who was pinned under the vehicle. Ayer told an officer he was also on ADHD medication. (Fond du Lac County Jail photo above, Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue photo below.)
