Monday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

Willy Adames, Rowdy Tellez and William Contreras homered, and the Milwaukee Brewers avoided a three-game sweep by beating the major league-leading Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 on Sunday.

Tampa Bay (34-14) dropped to 21-4 at Tropicana Field, the second-best 25-game home record since 1901 behind the 1978 Boston Red Sox at 22-3.  The Rays did have their lead in the tough AL East drop to 2 1/2 games over Baltimore, which beat Toronto 8-3 in 11 innings.

Adames, on the second anniversary of his trade from the Rays to the Brewers, hit a solo homer off opener Jalen Beeks in the second, and Tellez hit a fourth-inning, two-run drive against Cooper Criswell (0-1).

Freddy Peralta (5-3) gave up three runs and five hits over six innings as the NL Central-leading Brewers (25-21) stopped a three-game skid. Devin Williams, the third Milwaukee reliever, pitched 1 1/3 innings for his seventh save in as many chances.

Josh Lowe had a three-run homer, three hits and four RBIs for the Rays, whose 91 home runs lead the major leagues.

Owen Miller extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games with a leadoff single and scored on Contreras’ homer off Cooper Criswell (0-1) during a three-run fifth that put the Brewers ahead 6-3.

Arozarena and Harold Ramírez drew one-out walks in the fourth from Peralta, and Lowe tied the score 3-3 with his home run.

Arozarena was hit on the pinky finger by a Peter Strzelecki pitch in the eighth but remained in the game. He stole second and came home on Lowe’s single for a 6-4 lead.

Williams replaced Strzelecki with two on and two outs, and after walking Manuel Margot got a nice play from Miller, who fielded Isaac Paredes’ grounder behind third and threw to second for a forceout. It was Williams’ first appearance since a five-out save Tuesday at St. Louis.

Criswell, recalled from Triple-A Durham before the game when reliever Ryan Thompson was optioned, allowed five runs and eight hits on 4 2/3 innings.

Tampa Bay’s Yandy Díaz doubled in the seventh and has a career-best 14-game hitting streak.

Brewers RHP Corbin Burnes (4-3) will face Houston RHP Cristian Javier (4-1) on Monday night.  First pitch is at 6:40 at American Family Field.

In other games in the NL Central Sunday the Yankees beat the Reds 4-1, the Diamondbacks downed the Pirates 8-3, the Phillies nipped the Cubs 2-1 and the Cardinals over the Dodgers 10-5. The Brewers lead the Pirates by a game in the division.

In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at home to Quad Cities 7-4.  There are no games schedule for the Midwest League today.

Brooks Koepka answered every question at the PGA Championship with a performance that ranks among his best. His fifth major title was the sweetest of them all.  Koepka ran off three quick birdies early, never lost the lead amid a gritty fight from Viktor Hovland  and closed with a 3-under 67 for a two-shot victory at Oak Hill. Koepka left little doubt about his place in the game with his two-shot win over hard-luck Hovland, who shot a 68, and Scottie Scheffler, who closed with a 65 and returned to No. 1 in the world.

The victory moves Koepka to No. 13 in the world and No. 2 in the Ryder Cup standings. The top six automatically qualify, and it would be hard to fathom leaving Koepka off the American team. He can only earn points in the majors, and two more are still to come.

Koepka had to share the loudest cheers with California club pro Michael Block, who put on an amazing show over four days. Block made a hole-in-one on the 15th hole while playing with Rory McIlroy, and then made two tough par putts at the end for a fourth straight 70.

He tied for 15th, giving him a return date to the PGA Championship next year at Valhalla. It was the best finish by a club pro since Lonnie Nielsen tied for 11 in 1986 at Inverness.  Block charges $125 a lesson at Arroyo Trabuco in Mission Viejo, California. He earned just short of $290,000 at Oak Hill.

A month ago at the Masters, Koepka lost a two-shot lead in the final round by playing tentatively and was overrun by Jon Rahm. He vowed he would not do that again, and Koepka delivered in a major way, just like he used to.

Hovland made it easy for him at the end. Koepka was one shot ahead on the 16th hole when Hovland hit his 9-iron from a bunker that plugged into the lip in front of him — the same shot that stopped Corey Conners on Saturday — and made double bogey.

Koepka gouged out a shot from the rough to 5 feet for birdie and suddenly was leading by four shots when Hovland made double bogey.

Scheffler started four shots behind and never got closer than two. His 65 matched the best score of the tournament, posted by four other players on a day that was set up for scoring.

Bryson DeChambeau, who began the PGA with a 66, made too many mistakes in his round of 70. He stuck around to clasp hands with Koepka, two players from LIV Golf who used to get under each other’s skin.  LIV had three players in the top 10 for the second straight major.

Koepka, who finished at 9-under 271, received $3.15 million.

In the NBA the Heat won at home over the Celtics 128-102 to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals.  In the Western Conference Finals tonight Denver is at Los Angeles.  The Nuggets have a 2-0 lead in that series.

The Packers open their OTA’s today.  All eyes will be on quarterback Jordan Love, who’s set to take over after Aaron Rodgers was traded to the Jets.  Quarterback’s coach Tom Clements says Love is a good passer and moves well in the pocket and knows the offense.
