FDL COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RECEIVES GENEROUS DONATION IN HONOR OF FORMER EMPLOYEE

The Fond du Lac County Board this week unanimously accepted a donation of approximately $115,000 from the estate of Shirley Martin. The donation was made on behalf of a former sheriff’s deputy Ralph “Jerry” Martin who served with the Sheriff’s Office from 1954 to 1985 and retired with the rank of lieutenant.  “Jerry” passed away quite some time ago, but his wife Shirley recently passed, which is when the Sheriff’s Department became aware they had been named as a beneficiary of the estate. County Supervisor Dean Will, a former Sheriff’s Captain, told the County Board he started with the Sheriff’s Office a few years before Martin retired and remembers him as a great person. Will says it is rare that the Sheriff’s Office receives such a donation from a former employee. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt told the board the funds are placed in their capital account until they can decide how to honor Jerry Martin’s memory whether that is through the purchase of a special piece of equipment or forming a specialized unit within the department.
