FDL SHOOTING UPDATE

Fond du Lac Police say one of the two suspects in a Fond du Lac shooting that claimed the life of 20-year-old Tatyanna Zech and led to injuries for two others has turned himself in. Nationwide warrants were issued for two persons of interest in the shooting 17-year-old Antonio Johnston and 14-year-old Parise E. Larry Jr. At 2:30 this morning Larry turned himself into Fond du Lac Police and is being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail. As for the other two victims in the shooting detectives have learned the 49-year-old shooting victim was sleeping upstairs inside his apartment when a stray bullet entered the apartment striking him and critically wounding him at the time. Investigators also learned his 18-year-old son was downstairs inside their apartment and a stray bullet grazed his leg. Both men were upgraded to stable condition yesterday.

ARREST WARRANT ISSUED FOR ARSON SUSPECT

An arrest warrant was issued late last week in Fond du Lac County court for a 40-year-old Eden man suspected of igniting fires in the area for nearly two decades. Daniel Enright is charged with 5 counts of intentionally setting fire to another’s land and 2 counts of arson of a property other than a building. According to the criminal complaint all seven felony charges stem from fires set over the last three years, the earliest dating back to March 27th of 2020. Enright allegedly admitted to setting those fires usually to relieve stress. He told investigators with the Sheriff’s Office and DNR some of that stress came with the birth of his child three years ago and another was set after a fight with his fiancée. He is suspected of burning approximately 60 acres of land. Altogether the charges carry a maximum penalty of up to 37 years in prison.

FDL MAN ARRAIGNED ON MURDER CHARGE

A 57-year-old Fond du Lac man suspected in the death of 51-year-old Jacquelyn Jo Rooney in Fond du Lac last November was arraigned Tuesday. During the hearing in Fond du Lac County court Gary Davis pled not guilty to charges of first-degree intentional homicide, mayhem, and hiding a corpse. He will be back in court for a status conference on June 15th. Rooney was reported missing on November 12th. Her car was found outside a bar and when police went to her residence, they discovered her body under blankets and debris. She died of a dozen stab wounds to her torso and blunt force trauma to her head. It’s believed she was killed on November 9th. According to the criminal complaint she and Davis were dating, and both lived in the same apartment building.  Investigators learned the two were having relationship problems and Davis had physically attacked her at some point.

FLAGS TO BE FLOWN AT HALF STAFF IN HONOR OF ST. CROIX COUNTY DEPUTY

Governor Tony Evers yesterday signed an executive order ordering the flags of the United State and the state of Wisconsin to be flown at half-staff this Friday in honor of St. Croix County Sheriff’s Deputy Kaitie Leising who was killed in the line of duty last Saturday.  The 29-year-old deputy was shot by a suspected drunken driver. HOPE ON THE BLOCK DROP BOXES

Ribbon cutting ceremonies will be held in Ripon and North Fond du Lac today for drop boxes for items to help people in need. Five participants of Envision Greater Fond du Lac’s Leadership Fond du Lac Program came up with the idea. In partnership with Hope on the Block, the pantries will not only contain physical resources for people in need, but also provide them with a list of resources that can help them on a more permanent basis. Each drop box will be available 24/7 and contain items such as toiletries, feminine hygiene products, oral hygiene products, diapers, wipes, gloves and socks. The Ripon box will be located outside of the Traded Treasures & Community Food Pantry. In North Fond du Lac the box will be located outside the Spillman Library. The ribbon cutting ceremony in Ripon will be at 9 am and 11 am in North Fond du Lac at the host locations. Leadership Fond du Lac team member Mandy Kimes says, “We hope that this resource will help fill a gap when a need suddenly arises or at a time that is outside the hours of operation for area food pantries or shelters.”

FENTANYL AWARENESS

Health Departments around the country yesterday marked National Fentanyl Awareness Day by talking about the dangers of the drug and the availability of Narcan and Fentanyl test strips. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says Fentanyl test strips are a very good idea for those addicted to opioids because often dealers cut Fentanyl into other drugs unbeknownst to the user. Fentanyl is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine. Mueller says many health departments have Fentanyl test strips available for those who want them and you can also get them through needle exchange programs. More information is available at Fentanyl Awareness Day.org.

BALLWEG BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

State Senator Joan Ballweg’s first bill of the 2023-2024 legislative session was signed into law by the Governor Monday. The bill allows the Department of Tourism to update their practices by repealing out-of-date statutes. Senator Ballweg authored the bill which was supported by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism and organizations in the tourism industry. The changes made by the bill include eliminating unnecessary red tape and clarifies reporting duties for the state’s tourism department. It also allows the department to submit its annual report to the appropriate standing committee in each house of the legislature. One of the requirements it eliminated was for the Department of Tourism to distribute cheese at tourist information centers, which are no longer run by the state. The state lawmaker from Markesan says she is delighted Governor Evers signed the bill.

 SUMMER SCHOOL PREVENTS SUMMER SLIDE

Berlin Area Schools Superintendent Emmett Durtschi encourages students to be active both physically and academically over the summer months. He says it prevents what is known as the “Summer Slide” when minds that are inactive can actually lose some of the progress made during the school year. The District offers a three week Summer School program in June. For high school students it is mostly for credit recovery, but for elementary and middle school students there are opportunities for academic learning and enrichment.  He says even if a student doesn’t attend their Summer School from June 12th through June 29th he encourages them to engage in learning and be physically active. More information about the District’s Summer School is available on their website.
