The Packers ended the three-day draft Saturday with 13 picks.
After taking Iowa defensive end Lucas Van Ness in the first round Thursday, the Packers chose two tight ends and a receiver in the second round Friday.
The Packers started Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft by selecting Oregon State tight end Luke Musgrave. The 42nd overall pick has plenty of upside at the position. Musgrave certainly has height, standing at 6′6″.. He caught 11 passes in 2 games last year before his season was cut short by a knee injury.
Next up, the Packers traded the 45th pick in the draft to NFC North rival Detroit, moving down three spots to #48 while also picking up #159 overall (a 5th round pick).
But GM Brian Gutekunst wasn’t done wheeling and dealing. He traded the newly-acquired 48th pick to Tampa Bay, moving back two more spots to #50 overall, while picking up #179 overall (a 6th round pick).
The Packers spent that 50th overall pick on Michigan State wide receiver Jayden Reed. The 5′11″ pass catcher could fit in well as a slot receiver and has punt return skills as well. Gutekunst is hoping this pick can fill the void left by 2021 3rd round bust Amari Rodgers.
In the 3rd round, Green Bay had one pick and selected South Dakota State tight end Tucker Craft at #78 overall.
.
The Packers picked Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford in the fifth round on Saturday.
Clifford (6-2, 211), the 149th pick, beat out Will Levis for the starting job at Penn State, which is why Levis transferred to Kentucky after the 2020 season. He passed for 2,822 yards with 24 TDs and seven interceptions. He also added 176 rushing yards and five rushing TDs. Clifford is the third quarterback on the Packers’ roster, joining Jordan Love and Danny Etling.
The Packers drafted Auburn kicker Anders Carlson in the sixth round on Saturday. That move could lead to the exit of free agent Mason Crosby, who has a franchise-record 1,918 career points over 17 seasons.
Green Bay took Carlson with the 207th overall pick, which the Packers acquired in the trade that sent Rodgers to the New York Jets. This marks the first time the Packers have drafted a kicker since using a sixth-round pick on Crosby in 2007.
Green Bay drafted three receivers (Michigan State’s Jayden Reed in the second round, Virginia’s Dontayvion Wicks in the fifth and Charlotte’s Grant DuBose in the seventh) and two tight ends (Oregon State’s Luke Musgrave in the second and South Dakota State’s Tucker Kraft in the third).
The Packers didn’t draft any offensive linemen for the first time since 2015.
Shotei Ohtani hit a mammauth third-immomg homer as the Angels beat the Brewers Sunday, 3-0. Ohtani’s shot off Colin Rea reached 162 feet above the field, the highest since Statcast started tracking in 2015, and helped the Angels to avoid a three-game sweep.
Ohtani hit his seventh home run of the season on an 85.9 mph cutter from Rea (0-2). The ball left the bat with 114.3 exit velocity and a launch angle of 39 degrees, and after a hang time of 6.98 seconds it landed 413 feet away in deep center.
Ohtani is batting .394 (13 for 33) in his last eight games with two doubles, one triple, three homers, seven RBIs and four stolen bases. He is hitting .294 with 18 RBIs this season, and the two-way star is 4-0 with a 1.85 ERA in the mound.
José Suarez (1-1) allowed two hits in five innings with a season-high six strikeouts and three walks, rebounding from an April 24 outing against Oakland in which he gave up five home runs before getting his seventh out.
Jake Lamb homered in the second inning, his first since last Aug, 27, and Luis Rengifo had an RBI single in the seventh against Hoby Milner.
Rea struck out a career-high nine in five innings, allowing three hits and a walk.
Milwaukee was blanked for the fourth time and only had three hit s as they dropped to 18-10.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Marlins edged the Cubs 4-3, the Nationals beat the Pirates 7-2, the A’s nipped the Reds 5-4 and the Dodgers over the Cardinals 6-3. The Brewers trail the Pirates by 1 1/2 games in the Central.
In the NBA Playoffs Sunday the Heat beat the Knicks 108-101 to take a 1-0 lead in their series and the Warriors downed the Kings 120-100 to win their series 4-3. Tonight Philadelphia plays at Boston and Phoenix is a Denver.
On the Men’s PGA Tour Tony Finau won the Mexico Championship Sunday by three strokes over Jon Rahm. He finished 24 under for the tournament. Brandon Wu finished five shot behind.
