REDGRANITE MAN SUSPECTED OF FOURTH OWI

A 44-year-old Redgranite man has been arrested for his fourth operating while under the influence offense. It happened Saturday night on Interstate 41 north of State Highway 76 in Winnebago County when a state trooper noticed Toby Skipper deviating from his lane and not wearing a seatbelt. The trooper noticed signs of impairment while speaking to Skipper. Skipper was subsequently arrested following field sobriety testing and was taken to the Winnebago County Jail. The traffic stop occurred at approximately 5:05 pm Saturday evening.

RISE IN SUICIDE BY COP SITUATIONS

Authorities at the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office have had internal discussions about the rise in the number of incidents in which someone was looking at harming themselves through “Suicide by Cop.” The Sheriff’s Office has been involved in three recent incidents and Fond du Lac Police in two more where someone was armed and despondent. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says Seasonal Affective Disorder may have had a part but that’s just speculation. He says they’ve been fortunate that all five standoff situations have ended without anyone coming to harm. The Sheriff’s Office has a crisis social worker that responded to all three of their incidents. Other law enforcement agencies have someone similar working for them. Waldschmidt says it’s another tool they have to try and bring a dangerous situation to a more peaceful solution.  May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

BAIL REFORM

Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney says two statewide amendments approved by voters this past month regarding bail in criminal cases will help to protect crime victims. Judges are now allowed to better consider “flight risk” and to look at a person’s previous criminal history to decide how much bail should be set to help protect the public. Toney says the circuit court judges in Fond du Lac County have done a good job already in assessing bail so he doesn’t think the changes will have too much of an impact, but he says more importantly those changes are statewide. Toney says the Darrell Brooks Waukesha Christmas Parade attack was a key factor in the state’s bail reform movement.

TREFFERT CENTER

The Manager for Autism Services at SSM Health Treffert Center in Fond du Lac says they are proud of the services they provide for children up to 12 years of age. Meg Puddy says their new Treffert Studios at Moraine Park Technical College help those with Autism who are a little older giving them a creative outlet that can also provide job skills. She says over the years they’ve seen society pivot to provide more support and services.  She says Autism is a disability but autistic individuals bring so much value to the community. Puddy says when it comes to the conversation about Autism those with Autism should be included because as the slogan for marginalized groups goes, “Nothing about us, without us.” The CDC estimates that 1 in 36 children born suffer from some form of Autism. More information about the Treffert Center is available at SSM Health.com.
