MILWAUKEE MAN ARRESTED AFTER CHASE ON HWY 23 IN FDL COUNTY

A 22-year-old Milwaukee man is facing multiple charges after leading a Rosendale Police officer on a traffic chase Monday afternoon on State Highway 23. The officer tried to pull the man over for a traffic violation but the suspect increased his speed and headed east toward Fond du Lac. A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy deployed a set of stop sticks near County Highway Y but the suspect avoided them. A second set deployed by another deputy near Esterbrook Road did the trick deflating three tires on the suspect’s vehicle. He was arrested during a high risk traffic stop. The man was out on bond for carrying a concealed weapon and marijuana possession and wasn’t supposed to be driving. He was arrested for operating while under the influence, fleeing an officer, bail jumping and other traffic-related offenses. The State Patrol also assisted during the pursuit. No one was injured and the deflated tires on the suspect’s vehicle was the only damage that occurred during the pursuit.

OSHKOSH MAN SENTENCED FOR STEALING FROM NURSING HOME RESIDENT

A 64-year-old Oshkosh man charged with elder abuse for allegedly stealing over $426,000 from a 92-year-old nursing home resident was recently sentenced to three years in prison and six years of extended supervision upon release. State Attorney General Josh Kaul Monday announced the results of last week’s sentencing for Terry Lynn Culver. Culver has been ordered to pay nearly $259,000 to the estate of Edith Koehler. The Winnebago County court is allowing the state to seize Culver’s home to make restitution to the estate. In addition, he was ordered to pay the State’s Department of Revenue $9,211 plus surcharges. During a jury trial last October Culver was found guilty of 8 of the 10 felony charges brought against him. According to the criminal complaint Culver had power of attorney for the victim who was forced to move into a nursing home. Culver allegedly used the victim’s money on home improvements, at bars and restaurants, and casinos. He also sold pieces of the victim’s real estate and took possession of the victim’s house. False tax returns were also filed for five years.

ELECTION DAY

It’s Election Day in Wisconsin with voters asked to vote on a number of offices and some statewide issues. Officials say spending on the State Supreme Court race between Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Janet Protasiewicz and former Supreme Court Justice Daniel Kelly topped $42 million, about three times the previous national record for a court race. There are also three statewide referendum questions about bond conditions and welfare benefits. There are local offices to vote on including city, town and village representation, school board, and municipal court. There are also local referendums for instance school district referendums for Rosendale-Brandon, Berlin, and Winneconne. The City of Berlin has a tax levy question, and the Town of Berlin wants residents to weigh in on the use of ATV and UTVs on town roads. Polls are open until 8 pm. Results will be posted at Hometown Broadcasting.com.

BERLIN SCHOOLS REFERENDUM

Berlin Area School District Superintendent Emmett Durtschi

The Berlin Area School District today puts two referendum questions before voters. The first asks to exceed its revenue cap by $2.5 million a year for five years. The second question asks for permission to borrow $20 million to make improvements to renovate portions of the Clay Lamberton Elementary School. District Superintendent Emmett Durtschi says the original Clay Lamberton Elementary School was built in 1962 and there have been three additions over the years, but the middle part or original portion of the building needs some upgrades. He says the school board has been able to keep the mill rate at about $9 per thousand dollars of valuation on a property. If the first question passes the mill rate would remain around $9 per thousand dollars of valuation on property, but the $2.5 million each year would be used toward operational expenses instead of paying down debt. The City of Berlin also has a question on today’s ballot. To hear an interview with Emmett Durtschi click here.

UPDATING OUTDATED TOURISM STATUTES

The State Senate recently passed a bill authored by State Senator Joan Ballweg that updates some of the duties of the state’s Tourism Department. The state lawmaker from Markesan chairs the Senate’s Tourism Committee. She says some of the items in state statute pertaining to tourism no longer make sense or apply like requiring free cheese samples at Department of Transportation information centers. Another required the tourism department report to the legislature through the Natural Resources Committee. She also says although state tourism ads with Donald Driver and Kareem Abdul- Jabbar proved to be very popular, the state Tourism Department should not be required to feature Wisconsin celebrities in its advertising. The Tourism Industry had a $20.9 billion economic impact in Wisconsin in 2021.
