27 April 2023 News
Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s K9 Rip helped prevent a tragedy shortly before midnight last night when a man with a handgun pulled it from a chest holster as he ran from Sheriff’s deputies. Rip was part of the perimeter arrest team and was deployed and apprehended the man with a bite. The man dropped the firearm from his hand and was taken into custody. He was treated at the scene for bite wounds and was taken to St. Agnes Hospital for further treatment. Nearly three hours earlier the County’s Communications Center got a 911 call from a village of Campbellsport resident reporting the man pounding on the locked front door of the home and refusing to leave. The caller said the suspect was usually armed with a handgun and was threatening to shoot and kill people. The suspect was outside the residence when deputies arrived and refused to comply with commands. He would not show them his hands and was yelling at them to shoot him. Deputies could see a holstered handgun attached to the front of his clothing. Negotiations began for a peaceful surrender. Residents in the vicinity were evacuated. The Sheriff’s Office SWAT and Crisis Negotiation teams were called in to resolve the armed standoff. At 11:52 pm the SWAT team deployed beanbag rounds which struck the suspect and he tried to flee on foot drawing his weapon. K9 Rip was released and the man was apprehended. Multiple criminal charges will be brought against the man.
