With the potential for severe weather conditions in southern and central Wisconsin today the statewide tornado drill is being postponed until tomorrow. RESTORING HISTORIC DESIGNATION FOR LITTLE WHITE SCHOOLHOUSE

Congressman Glenn Grothman says he and Senator Ron Johnson are working to ensure the Little White Schoolhouse in Ripon gets its designation as a National Historic Landmark back. The move of the “Birthplace of the Republican Party” Monday to 1074 West Fond du Lac Street led to its delisting as a National Historical site. Congressman Grothman believes they can get the designation restored. The federal lawmaker says the new location for the Little White Schoolhouse will have benefits the previous location did not including parking, restrooms, and a visitors’ center. While it was located on Blackburn Street it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on August 14th, 1973 and it was designated as a National Historic Landmark on May 30th, 1974.

RIPON COLLEGE LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE

Ripon College President Victoria Folse says they are constantly brainstorming about the kind of education graduating high school seniors will need in the future. She believes there is a place for a liberal arts education even as we contemplate more ways to use AI or Artificial Intelligence. Ripon College will be offering an engineering degree for undergraduates. She says they believe it will be distinctive in the region. Speaking of the Ripon College future tomorrow the college will hold a pair of groundbreakings for the new science center and a new campus stadium. The first will be on the steps of the Farr Hall of Science at 11:15 am and the second at the lower Sadoff Field across from the street from the Willmore Center at 1:30 pm.

DRUG TAKE BACK DAY SATURDAY

Wisconsin will be participating in National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday. Where collections used to be held for old and unwanted drugs most areas of the state have drug drop off boxes now at local police stations, hospitals or pharmacies. In particular officials are worried about the availability of opioids. More than 2.9 million opioid prescriptions are written every year in Wisconsin. Fond du Lac County Health Department officials say in the past upwards of 100,000 pounds of medication have been collected in a single year. That’s the same weight as two full-sized snowplows you see clearing our roads every winter. The most important thing about the collection is the lives potentially saved with every safe disposal. Drug drop boxes for safe disposal in the area are located at the Brandon Police Department, Oakfield Police Department, Ripon Community Hospital, the Ripon Police Department, Rosendale Police Department, St. Agnes Hospital, Waupun Memorial Hospital, and Waupun Police Department. Hours may vary.

DAY STABILIZATION SERVICES

A psychotherapist supervisor for the Ripon Community Hospital’s Day Stabilization Services says so far it is working the way it was designed for. The Day Stabilization Services offers support for up to 23 hours to individuals experiencing mental health crises. Amy Bayer of SSM Health says most patients are ready to go home before that 23 hours is up, but they provide follow up services to make sure they are okay. She says before being checked into the Day Stabilization Services a patient has to be medically cleared which can be done through the hospital’s emergency department. According to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, mental illness is very common. One in five people live with a mental health condition. With the high demand for psychiatry and outpatient mental health services the wait lists are six to eight months or longer.
