GREEN LAKE COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER SERVICES

The Green Lake County Board has been discussing the next step in filling the need for a Medical Examiner. It has been outsourcing the work to Marquette County. Green Lake County Supervisor Luke Dretske says the county’s former administrator and corporation counsel set up an agreement with Marquette County for Medical Examiner services, but it left a lot to be desired and their current administrator Cate Wylie feels they should have a better contract. If she is unable to negotiate something fair with Marquette County they have the option to terminate the contract.  Dretske says another option is for Green Lake County to start its own Medical Examiner’s Office, which would be more costly at first but if they perform services for additional counties they would be able to offset those costs with added revenue.

EPILEPSY

A clinical neuropsychologist with SSM Health Greater Fond du Lac says it is possible to live with epilepsy. Dr. Chris Zachar-Tirado says epilepsy put simply is “a crossed wire in the brain” which can trigger seizures. It can be treated with medication in most cases and sometimes there’s a surgical option. He says when considering treatment other factors in a person’s life need to be considered as well. Such as whether supervision is needed, driving, levels of independency, employability, and education. Things that can trigger an epileptic seizure include increased stress, lack of sleep, excessive alcohol consumption, menstruation, flashing lights, some herbal medications, and most of all not taking prescribed medication for epilepsy. He says a person living with epilepsy will have to make some lifestyle changes. Approximately 3.4 million people in the United States suffer from epilepsy, 3 million adults and 470,000 children.
