Allie Ziebell is the Wisconsin girls basketball Gatorade Player of the Year. The Neenah High School junior and future UConn Huskie picked up the honor on Thursday.
Ziebell averaged 25.5 points per game as the Rockets finished the season 26-2, losing to Hortonville in the sectional finals. With one season remaining in her high school career, Ziebell is already the all-time leading scorer in Fox Valley Association history with 1,995 points
She becomes the 4th Rocket to win a Gatorade State Player of the Year award, joining 3 boys soccer players: Kris Kelderman in 1986, Stuart Grable in 2007, and Adam Pohlman in 2013.
Tyler Kolek scored all 19 of his points after halftime, including the tiebreaking free throws with 15.8 seconds left in overtime, and No. 6 Marquette rallied for a 72-70 victory over scrappy St. John’s in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday.
Olivier-Maxence Prosper added 16 points, several on highlight-reel dunks, and the top-seeded Golden Eagles (26-6) advanced to play 11th-ranked and fourth-seeded UConn or fifth-seeded Providence in the semifinals Friday night at Madison Square Garden.
Marquette has won seven straight and 12 of 13, reaching the Big East semifinals for the fourth time overall and first since 2019.
The Golden Eagles, who trailed by 14 late in the first half, had to turn their defensive intensity way up to avoid an upset. They escaped when Posh Alexander’s good look at a 3-pointer for St. John’s glanced off the front rim at the buzzer.
Oso Ighodaro had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Marquette, making several key plays down the stretch. Kam Jones added 11 points on 4-of-16 shooting.
Dylan Addae-Wusu and David Jones each scored 16 to lead eighth-seeded St. John’s (18-15), which beat No. 9 seed Butler 76-63 in the first round Wednesday.
The Milwaukee Bucks won at home over the Brooklyn Nets Thursday night, 118-113. Playing again without Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis led the Bucks with 28 points and Brook Lopez added 24 as five players scored in double figures for Milwaukee. Patty Mills scored 23 points and Cam Thomas had 21 for the Nets. Milwaukee won its third straight and leads the Boston Celtics by 2 ½ games in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks are back in action Saturday night at Golden State against the Warriors.
In Cactus League baseball Thursday, the Giants beat the Brewers 5-2. The game was tid at 2-2 through five innings before San Francisco scored two runs in the 6th and one in the seventh to notch the win. Each team had sven hits.
The Brewers host the Guardians this afternoon. Triston McKenzie (0-1 is on the mound for Cleveland against Brandon Woodruff (0-0) for Milwaukee. First pitch is at 2:10 CST.
In The Players Championship at Sawgrass, Chad Ramy shot an 8-under 64 and leads Collin Morikawa by one stroke.
The Wisconsin Herd, NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, beat the Lakeland Magic 132-131 in overtime. The Herd came out shooting 52.3% from the field to grab a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Magic took control of the game in the second quarter outscoring the Herd 40-24 to go ahead 70-58 at the half. The Herd started their comeback in the third quarter outscoring the Magic by two points, but it wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Herd took the lead for the first time since the first quarter. The Herd held the lead until the last 30 seconds when the Magic rushed back to tie the game and send it into overtime. The Herd scored the first two baskets of overtime, but the Magic counter ed with their own two baskets to go ahead 131-129. Iverson Molinar hit one free throw to bring the Herd to 130. The two teams would go on to miss the next eight shots before Paris Bass secured the win with a contested fast-break layup.
Elijah Hughes guided the Herd with a season-high 30 points while Paris Bass added a double-double of 29 points and 13 rebounds. Iverson Molinar also posted a season-high 22 points and nine assists.
Jay Scrubb led the Magic with a triple-double of 24 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Au’Diese Toney followed with 22 points.
The Herd will return home on Monday, March 13 to take on the Memphis Hustle with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CST.
