Thursday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

Chucky Hepburn scored 19 points and Connor Essegian added 18, the two combining for nine of Wisconsin’s 11 3-pointers in a 79-74 overtime victory over Penn State on Wednesday night.

After a layup by Max Klesmit gave Wisconsin a 76-72 lead with 44 seconds remaining in overtime, Penn State’s Camren Wynter missed a 3-pointer and the Badgers closed out the victory at the free-throw line.

Hepburn made 5 of 9 3-pointers and Essegian 4 of 7 for the Badgers, who were 11 of 24 from 3-point distance. Tyler Wahl had 16 points, eight assists and six rebounds for Wisconsin (14-9, 6-7 Big Ten) and Steven Crowl added 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Jalen Pickett, who earlier this week was named one of 10 finalists for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, had 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Penn State (14-10, 5-8). Seth Lundy added 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals, making 4 of 8 3-pointers. Camren Wynter scored 15 points and Andrew Funk 10.

With 59 seconds left in regulation and the score tied at 65, Essegian forced a turnover by Wynter. Wisconsin called timeout with 44 seconds remaining, setting up a 3-pointer by Hepburn. Lundy hit a tying 3-pointer with 23 seconds left and Wisconsin played for the last shot but did not score.

In beating Penn State for the fifth consecutive time, Wisconsin swept the season series and handed the Nittany Lions their second home loss in 13 games. Wisconsin had lost seven of nine previous games coming in.  Wisconsin plays at Nebraska on Saturday, the same day that Penn State plays at Maryland.

The Packers are expected to hire Cardinals cornerbacks coach Greg Williams, according to a report by NFL insider Aaron Wilson.   Williams has 13 years of experience as a coach in the NFL, and spent the last four seasons with Arizona. Williams was left looking for a new job after the Cardinals parted ways with head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Prior to his time in Arizona, Williams also coached defensive backs in Indianapolis and Denver. Williams worked under head coach Vance Joseph during his time in Denver. Eventually following to Arizona after Joseph was hired as defensive coordinator by Kingsbury.

There’s no telling what role Williams will take on the Packers coaching staff, but Green Bay recently saw secondary coach Jerry Gray join the Falcons coaching staff. Gray was at the end of his contract, and free to leave for Atlanta.

Currently Ryan Downard coaches the Packers safeties, and could also be a candidate to move to defensive passing game coordinator as well.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed a number of key league issues — including diversity efforts, officiating and player health and safety — during his news conference on Wednesday ahead of Super Bowl LVII.

Goodell told reporters that the league is “pleased to see progress” in its efforts to increase diversity at the coaching and executive level, but that “we always look to see how can we do better.”

Goodell credited the implementation of the NFL coach and front office accelerator program this past year as something that helped introduce teams to a more diverse candidate pool, telling reporters that the Tennessee Titans were introduced to their new general manager, Ran Carthon, during December’s event..

Regarding officiating — which made headlines throughout the season, and most notably in the AFC Championship Game — Goodell defended the work done by the league’s refs and pushed back against any notion that there has been a drain in talent in the officiating pool.

Last October, the NFL and the NFLPA agreed to modified concussion protocols after an investigation determined that the previous protocols did not lead to the intended result with Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa..

On Wednesday, Goodell addressed the NFL’s modified policy and its recently released data that showed an increase in concussions for players during the 2022 season compared with the previous year.

“Any time we can change the protocols to make it safer for our players, we’re gonna do that,” Goodell said. “What we changed in October is something that we thought would give us a better opportunity to treat those conditions more conservatively. … I think that’s also why concussions went up this year because we had a broader definition, a more conservative definition. We had an increase of 17 percent of evaluations. So if you have more evaluations, you’re going to have more concussions.”

Goodell said the next frontier for concussion prevention will be improvements to the helmets players wear.

The Bucks are in Los Angeles tonight to play the Lakers. The Central Division-leading Bucks are second in the Eastern Conference with a 37-17 record, 1 ½ games behind the Celtics.

The St. Norbert women’s basketball team continues their domination of the NACC, as they stay unbeaten in conference play, defeating Milwaukee School of Engineering 66-38, their 11th win in a row.

The Oshkosh Titans win streak ends at 7 games, after WIAC co-conference leader Whitewater knocked off the Titans 67-55.

Four Green Knights were in double figures, led by Kaycee Gierczak’s 18 points.  They are one win away from clinching at least a share of the conference crown and sealed their bye into the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Oshkosh was led by Kayce Vaile’s 17 points and 12 rebounds.

In men’s college basketball tonight Cornell College is at Ripon College. Ripon is 11-10 overall and 7-5 in the conference.  Tipoff is at 7:30.
