In the NBA Monday night the Bucks won at Portland over the Trail Blazers 127-108. Brooks Lopez led Milwaukee with 27 points while Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 24 in the just under 23 minutes and Jrue Holiday chipped in with 20, while three others were in double figures. Milwaukee shot 54 percent from the field. Damian Lillard led the Trail Blzzers with 28 points while Anternee Simons scored 21. The Central Division-leading Bucks moved into second place in the Eastern Conference with a 37-17 record, one game behind the Boston Celtics.
The Minnesota Vikings hired Brian Flores as their defensive coordinator on Monday, their first step toward trying to revive a once-dominant unit that ranked among the NFL’s worst last season.
Flores was a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach this season for Pittsburgh, after three years as head coach in Miami.
Prior to being hired by the Dolphins, Flores was an assistant for 11 seasons for New England, the last eight on the defensive side. The Patriots won four Super Bowls during his time there, which included four years as a scout. The last of those was in the 2018 season, which was Flores’ first as the defensive play-caller. The Patriots jumped from 17th to seventh in the league that year in opponent passer rating (85.4) and were tied for fifth with 28 takeaways.
After he was fired by the Dolphins, Flores, who is Black, filed a class-action lawsuit alleging racial discrimination by the team and the NFL. The case is still tied up in the court system.
With the Steelers, the 41-year-old Flores drew rave reviews from players who saw him as an extra head coach on Mike Tomlin’s staff. The Steelers were tied with the Patriots this season for the fewest rushing touchdowns (seven) allowed in the league.
Flores replaces Ed Donatell, who was fired last month after one year with head coach Kevin O’Connell. The Vikings were second-worst in the league in yards allowed and fourth-worst in points allowed during the regular season. The NFC North champions were then ousted from the playoffs in the wild-card round by the New York Giants as quarterback Daniel Jones threw for 301 yards and rushed for 78 more.
On Monday, players and coaches from the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs took the podiums at Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix to share their thoughts on Sper Bowl LVII and much more.
Starting off strong with the NFC, NFL Network’s Michael Irvin caught up with Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts on some of the first questions of the evening, including how this year will be the first time two Black quarterbacks are starting in the Super Bowl as Hurts squares off against Patrick Mahomes.
“Now, the first time for two to go head-to-head,” Hurts said. “That’s uplifting the next generation of quarterbacks. That 4-year-old, 5-year-old kid back in Houston, back in Philly, back in Texas, Louisiana, wherever across the world that regardless of what someone may say or have an opinion about you, you can do it. You can do it, too. There’s a platform here. I value the platform I have, I’m sure like Pat does, as well. So, we just want to inspire the next people.”
Irvin also spoke with Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, who asked the Hall of Famer a question for a change. Sirianni wanted to know if Irvin, who spent his entire 12-year career with the Dallas Cowboys, would pick the rival Eagles this Sunday.
“Coach, I got to keep this thing right down the middle, coach,” Irvin said. “Right now, but I have had some moments here with the Eagles. I do think the Eagles have the advantage right now, coach.”
It was never a question, but Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes answered it anyway. He’ll be playing through his high ankle sprain in the Super Bowl against the Eagles.
“I’m just gonna make it real quick,” Mahomes said Monday during Super Bowl LVII Opening Night. “I’ll play through all injuries that the trainers will let me play through. That’s the list. As long as the trainers are OK for me to get out there, I’m going to play through it.”
Mahomes initially suffered the sprain in the Divisional Round against the Jaguars after his leg got caught and rolled up under Jacksonville linebacker Arden Key on Kansas City’s second drive. He finished out the possession for a field goal to take a 10-7 lead, but he would miss the remaining 14 minutes of the first half.
He returned in the second half taped and hobbled, sometimes wasting passes in the dirt either to avoid an oncoming rush or due to a lack of ability to firmly plant on his right ankle. Still, he produced essentially the same results in an unhealthy second half as he did in the first quarter.
He was 12-of-15 passing with 84 yards and a touchdown at the time of his exit, and he completed 10 of 15 passes for 111 yards and another TD after his return.
Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes could be headed to the doghouse after admitting he has been so focused on Super Bowl LVII that he has not planned Valentine’s Day for his wife.
“I didn’t even notice it was coming up, so don’t tell her that I said that. I’ll make sure I’ll have some plans now,” said Mahomes.
Mahomes made it clear that he will not have the song “Dreams and Nightmares” by rapper Meek Mill on his playlist for this Sunday. That is the song the Eagles ran out to when they beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.
Who does the best Patrick Mahomes impression? Well, according to Mahomes himself, it is none other than coach Andy Reid.
“He doesn’t do it in front of a lot of people, thankfully, but Andy Reid for sure has the best impression of my voice,” said Mahomes.
Tom Brady will not go immediately from the playing field to the broadcast booth. Brady told Colin Cowherd during Monday’s episode of “The Herd” on FS1 and FOX Sports Radio that he will not start his broadcasting career with FOX until the 2024 season.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion — who retired last week after a 23-year career with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers — signed a 10-year deal with FOX last May to become the network’s top analyst when he decided to quit playing for good.
Brady said that he didn’t want to immediately rush into announcing and that he wanted to catch up on some other parts of his life.
Brady is expected to eventually join Kevin Burkhardt on FOX’s top team. Burkhardt and Greg Olsen will call their first Super Bowl on Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles.
FOX, which is carrying its 10th Super Bowl on Sunday, also has Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans after the 2024 season. Brady is still not expected to be a part of FOX’s pregame coverage on Sunday.
