Monday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

Boo Buie scored 13 points, Brooks Barnhizer had a clutch blocked shot in the final minute, and Northwestern defeated Wisconsin 54-52 on Sunday night.  The Wildcats swept the season series with Wisconsin for the first time since the 1995-96 season.

Wisconsin scored seven consecutive points and took a 49-48 lead on a jumper by Chucky Hepburn with 3:21 to go. Chase Audige put the Wildcats back on top 50-49 with 2:55 remaining and there would be only one more made basket the rest of the game. After a series of turnovers, missed jumpers and missed free throws, Hepburn hit a jumper to give the Badgers a 51-50 lead with 45 seconds remaining. Buie then hit two free throws to put Northwestern back on top, 52-51 at :31.

Barnhizer blocked a layup attempt by Hepburn with 20 seconds left and the Wildcats held on to win despite a missed 1-and-1 opportunity by Tydus Verhoeven. Hepburn’s missed jumper with six seconds left was Wisconsin’s final chance to take the lead.

Hepburn scored 17 points for Wisconsin (13-9, 5-7 Big Ten) and Connor Essegian added 15 points, all on 5-of-11 3-point shooting.

Audige added 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Northwestern (16-7, 7-5). Barnhizer had eight points, seven rebounds and one big block.

Northwestern led 20-13 after Nick Martinelli hit a jumper with 8:39 left in the first half. Wisconsin closed to within 22-21 with an 8-2 run highlighted by Essegian’s 3-pointer. The Wildcats went on to lead 26-23 at the half.

Ripon College 53, Lawrence University 53-Ripon was led by Jaylen Mahone’s 17 points and Cade Tackmier added 15.  Elliot Jung led Lawrence with 22.  The Red Hawks improve to 11-10 overall and 7-5 in the conference.

UW-Oshkosh 79, UW-River Falls 70.  The Titans improve to 17-5 overall and lead the WIAC with a 10-1 record.

Women’s  College

Ripon College 73, Lawrence University 49-  Ripon had four players in double figures, led by Skylar Brescia’s 19 points. Ripon improves to 16-6 overall and 11-1 in the conference.

UW-Oshkosh 54, UW-River Falls 44-Ava Douglas led the Titans with 17 points as they improve to 17-overall and 7-4 in the conference.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers finally gets his name on the Wall of Champions behind the first tee at Pebble Beach, joining a long list that includes Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

Rodgers and Ben Silverman  of Canada held on for a 1-shot victory Sunday in the pro-am portion of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The prize is their name listed on the wall, which features pro-am winners, tournament winners, USGA champions at Pebble and more.

Rodgers did his share of heavy lifting. Silverman, coming off a Korn Ferry Tour win, finished at 1-over 216 and missed the cut. Rodgers, playing off a 10 handicap, said he had not played golf since training camp until last Monday.

They finished at 26-under par, 1 shot ahead of Peter Malnati and Don Colleran, the retired president and CEO of FedEx whose name already is on the wall. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Keith Mitchell were 4 behind.

Meanwhile, Justtin Rose was a steady presence on a day of weather that changed by the minute, playing 19 holes in 9 under par and leaving the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in the dark Sunday with a 2-shot lead.

The final round of the wind-delayed tournament was to be completed Monday morning, and the 42-year-old Rose was in position to win for the first time in four years.

He was at 15 under par through nine holes — his shot safely in the 10th fairway — when the final round was stopped as the sun dipped behind the Pacific horizon.

Denny McCarthy, who started the final round 6 shots behind, shot 29 on the front nine at Pebble Beach to soar into contention. He chose to continue the 16th hole, hitting his approach to 15 feet and then choosing to mark his ball and stop for the night.  He was at 13 under par along with Brendon Todd (through 12 holes) and Peter Malnati, who was in the final group with Rose.

No one was going to mistake this for a serious football game. Not with celebrities Snoop Dogg (AFC) and Pete Davidson (NFC) serving as honorary team captains.

But the revamped Pro Bowl Games resulted in greater intensity than recent years and the first NFC victory since the AFC vs. NFC format was reintroduced in 2017. In front of 58,331 fans at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, the NFC won 35-33 in the reimagined event that now consists of a series of skills competitions and three separate flag football games.

The flag games themselves were noticeably more competitive than the standard games of recent years, despite not being of the traditional tackle variety. The reduced risk of injury seemingly motivated players to go harder.

With the AFC entering the final flag game leading the overall scoring 21-15, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins led an NFC rally with three touchdown passes in the final game, which consists of two 10-minute halves. Cousins hit 49ers teammates Kyle Juszcyk and George Kittle for two of his scores, with Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-RaSt. Brown accounting for the other.

But the game was not without a somewhat unfortunate event, with Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett suffering an injury during one of the skills competitions. Reportedly a dislocated toe, the injury left Garrett limping badly.

In the NBA Monday night the Bucks play at Portland against the Trail Blazers. Tipoff is at 9:00 CDT.  Milwaukee is coming off a 123-115 home victory over the Miami Heat Saturday night.

Martin Truex Jr. won NASCAR’s return to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for its season-opening exhibition race — a sloppy Sunday night extravaganza in which the Wiz Khalifa halftime show might have been the most entertaining part of the event.

Truex took the lead with 25 laps to go in the Busch Light Clash, a 150-lap race that was moved from Daytona International Speedway last year to the Coliseum. NASCAR built a temporary quarter-mile track inside the iconic venue in a bold attempt to try something radically different.

Last year’s race was considered a smashing success based on the new fans drawn to the event and excitement over the progressive approach to creating a brand new type of racing.   NASCAR knew it was going to be difficult to duplicate the success in its return and the racing Sunday wasn’t great — there were 25 cautions, and laps under yellow didn’t count. There were only five cautions in last year’s race.

Austin Dillon and Kyle Busch, in his debut for Richard Childress Racing, finished second and third for RCR. They joined Truex on a podium for a NASCAR-first medal ceremony held below the Coliseum’s famed peristyle.  Alex Bowman and Kyle Larson went fourth and fifth for Hendrick Motorsports, and Tyler Reddick was sixth in his debut for 23XI.

The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Windy City Bulls 144-133. The Bulls stole the first lead of the game, but the Herd went on a 14-0 run to secure the forefront at the end of the first quarter 35-29. The Herd continued to be unstoppable offensively building to a 15-point advantage in the second quarter and later pushing ahead to the largest lead of the game with 20 points. The Herd gave up a costly 19-4 point run for the Bulls which pushed them ahead in the third quarter. Wisconsin held them off to lead 105-103 at the end of the third quarter but the Bulls didn’t stay down for long. The Bulls pushed ahead to a six-point lead and stayed ahead to win the game.

Rob Edwards led the Herd with 26 points while A.J. Green added 25 points. Alize Johnson posted a triple-double with 22 points, 16 rebounds and assists.

The Bulls were captained by Carlik Jones with 40 points followed by Marko Simonovic with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

The Herd stays at home to take on the Santa Cruz Warriors on Tuesday, February 7 with tip-off at 6:00 p.m. CST.
