No injuries were reported during a fire at 229 Ellis Street in Fond du Lac yesterday afternoon. Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue officials say fire caused minor damage to a porch at that address and was quickly extinguished. The cause of the blaze is being determined.
Dodge County Walk Away Caught
Sheriff’s officials in Dodge County say a walk away from their jail was taken into custody Monday night. Thirty-five-year-old Andrew Zirbel had failed to return from a court-allowed medical exam. Sheriff Dale Schmidt thanks the public for their assistance but also complimented deputies who followed up on leads before locating and arresting him. Zirbel had Huber privileges with the jail. Now as a result of failing to return from the medical appointment he will face felony charges.
Dodge County Board Approves Appointment Of Emergency Management Director
Dodge County’s new Emergency Management Director has some familiarity with the role. That’s because Joe Meagher once held that position for the county. In 2014 he swapped titles with Amy Haase who became director. But Haase left in December to take over as Fond du Lac County’s Communications and Emergency Management Director. Meagher served as Dodge County Director in the interim while the county looked for a new director, but found Meagher was the right person for the job. The Dodge County Board made it official in the past week. He will be paid $38.51 an hour, receive fringe benefits and get paid time off.
Road Money Request
The Green Lake County Board last night approved a resolution asking the state to consider using a portion of its budget surplus for maintenance, repair and replacement of county highways. County Supervisor Luke Dretske says the governor and legislators have a tendency to overlook the needs of more rural counties. A county supervisor from Berlin came up with the idea for the resolution. Dretske says it doesn’t hurt to ask for more county highway aid or shared revenue. He says it is our tax money and Green Lake County isn’t getting much of a return on what it sends to the State Capitol in Madison. Green Lake County’s state legislators are aware of the issue and have been lobbying for more state aid and shared revenue for the area.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services is ramping up promotion of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It’s a free and confidential service that state residents can call, chat or text. It is available 24/7. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says mental health and thoughts of suicide don’t take a break so it is good to have trained counselors available on the other end of the line when someone is in crisis. Mueller says the state 988 line is a nice option for people who would prefer not to call a local number for help. However, Fond du Lac County does have its own crisis line too, which is 920-929-3535.
