Tuesday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team will try to get back on the winning track tonight when it hosts Michigan. The Badgers are 14-10 overall and 6-8 in the Big Ten.  The Wolverines are 14-11 overall and 8-6 on conference play.

Coach Mike Budenholzer said Monday that newly acquired forward Jae Crowder won’t start playing with Milwaukee until after the All-Star break. Crowder won’t be available when the Bucks put their 10-game winning streak on the line Tuesday against the NBA-leading Boston Celtics or when they visit Chicago two nights later.

Crowder hasn’t played at all this season after making 67 starts and averaging 9.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists for the Phoenix Suns in 2021-22. The Suns announced in late September that Crowder wouldn’t be joining them for training camp in what was described as a mutual decision. They’d been working on a trade for him ever since.

The 32-year-old Crowder wouldn’t specify what caused his issues with the Suns.

The Suns moved him to the Brooklyn Nets in the deal that brought Kevin Durant to Phoenix. The Bucks acquired Crowder by sending three second-round picks plus forward Jordan Nwora, guard George Hill and center Serge Ibaka to the Indiana Pacers and shipping two second-round picks to Brooklyn. The Pacers later waived Ibaka. Crowder appreciated the opportunity to go to Milwaukee.

After making NBA Finals appearances with Miami in 2020 and Phoenix in 2021, Crowder wanted to continue playing for a winning team. Heading back to the Midwest enables him to spend more time with his 9-year-old daughter, Jada, who lives in Chicago.

This also represents a homecoming for Crowder, who played at Marquette from 2010-12. Crowder said he headed to Marquette’s downtown campus once he arrived in Milwaukee.

The Bucks believe Crowder’s presence as a 3-point shooter and big wing defender boosts their bid to win a second title in three seasons.

Crowder helped Miami knock off the top-seeded Bucks in five games in the 2020 Eastern Conference semifinals. Crowder was with Phoenix the following season when the Suns lost to the Bucks in the NBA Finals. He shot over 40% from 3-point range in each of those two series and has 107 career postseason appearances.

The Wisconsin Herd, NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, have acquired a 1st round pick in the 2023 NBA G League Draft and the Returning Player Rights to Sacar Anim from the Ontario Clippers in exchange for Djordjije Jovanovic and the Returning Player Rights to Frank Mason. Before the trade, The Wisconsin Herd acquired Djordjije Jovanovic through the available player pool.

Sacar Anim currently plays in the Lega Basket Serie A (LBA), a professional men’s basketball league in Italy. During the 2021-22 season, Anim appeared in 11 games for the Ontario Clippers averaging 3.3 points. Before joining the NBA G League, Anim spent five years at Marquette University and in his final year appeared in 30 games while averaging 13.1 points and 4 rebounds.

Starting extra innings with a runner on second base during the regular season was made a permanent rules change by Major League Baseball on Monday after three seasons of use during the coronavirus pandemic.

Known by some as the “Ghost Runner” and by others as the “Manfred Man” after baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, the rule was unanimously adopted by the sport’s 11-person competition committee.

Use of position players as pitchers also was tightened by the committee. They will be limited to extra innings, when a player’s team is losing by eight or more runs or is winning by 10 or more runs in the ninth inning. Last year, a position player could pitch only in extra innings or if his team was losing or winning by six or more runs.

The joint competition committee, established in the lockout settlement last March, includes six management officials, four union representatives and one umpire.

There were 216 extra-inning games last year, down from 233 in 2021 and 78 during the shortened 2020 season. The longest last year was Cleveland’s 7-6, 15-inning win over Minnesota in the second game of a doubleheader on Sept. 17. That was one inning shy of the longest in the three seasons of the rule, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 16-inning win at San Diego on Aug. 25, 2021.

Home teams went 113-103 in extra-inning games last year and are 262-263 in extra innings since the runner on second rule started in 2020, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Home teams were 312-294 in extra-inning games from 2017-19, Elias said.

The rule was adopted as a pandemic measure for the 2020 season and appears likely to stay.
