Weather Calls For Service
Ice and snow-covered roads kept law enforcement officials busy Thursday. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies responded to more than 35 calls for assistance. They were dispatched for at least 20 calls for vehicles in a ditch, 10 accidents, and numerous disabled vehicles between 10:30 am and 10 pm last night. There were other calls including an electrical transformer that was on fire, and tree branches down on the road. Several semis had trouble trying to get up hills or negotiating highway ramps. Road conditions deteriorated as the area got a wintry mix and then snow. Sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots may remain slippery today. (Ripon Police Department photo above)
Oshkosh Man Charged For FDL County Chase
Bond has been set at $75,000 cash for a 35-year-old Oshkosh man who led a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy on a 15 mile traffic chase last Saturday morning. Tracey Spivey faces six different charges including second degree recklessly endangering safety, fleeing an officer, resisting an officer, and was cited for his second operating while intoxicated offense. The deputy pulled over Spivey’s vehicle on Johnson Street in Fond du Lac for having license plates that did not match the vehicle and were suspended. When the deputy had contact with Spivey the deputy suspected he was drunk. Spivey also lied about who he was. When asked to get out of the vehicle Spivey took off. To end the chase the deputy had to force Spivey’s vehicle off the road. Spivey then fled on foot and the deputy had to use a stun gun to subdue him. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for next Friday.
Slain Milwaukee Police Officer Was Attending Marian University in FDL
The Milwaukee Police Officer killed in a shootout with a robbery suspect Tuesday morning had ties to the Fond du Lac area. Thirty-seven-year-old Peter Jerving was a current student at Marian University. In a statement Marian University President Michelle Majewski said, “The life of an officer expresses everything we are or would like to be in the service of others. Officer Peter Jerving was such a life-an energetic and compassionate individual who laid down his life for others.” Jerving was working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He had been with the Milwaukee Police Department for four years. Jerving was mortally wounded during an exchange of gun fire. He was taken to a hospital where he died. The suspect died at the scene though it is not clear whether that was from being shot by the officer or whether it was a self-inflicted wound. Visitation and funeral services for Officer Jerving will be held in Brookfield next Monday.
Police Chase Naked Man in Manitowoc
You could say that a 48-year-old Sheboygan man being sought by Manitowoc Police Wednesday had nothing to hide. Police were called to the 3300 block of Wildwood Drive for a report of a naked man running through backyards. They found footprints in the snow made by someone not wearing shoes. A Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office drone and K9 were used to track the man. K9 Neko tracked him through several backyards and located clothing and property belonging to the man. The man was eventually found unconscious and lying naked in the snow in the area of Chasm Lane. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for a moderate case of hypothermia. Police say it is possible he was under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs. His vehicle was found in the 3500 block of Waldo Boulevard. Neighbors found more of the man’s property in their yards and turned it over to police.
Sturgeon Registrations
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will be returning to in-person registration of sturgeon taken during the spearing season. Conservation Warden Bill Hankee says with COVID-19 on the wane the DNR will be requiring successful spearers to register their sturgeon at one of the registration stations around Lake Winnebago or the Upriver Lakes by 2 pm the day they take their fish. Hankee says the numbers of sturgeon registered help them keep track of how close they are to the harvest cap which affects the length of the season. The season starts Saturday and could run a maximum of 16 days.
Diagnosing Osteoarthritis
SSM Health Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Benjamin Wiseley is now serving patients in Fond du Lac and Ripon. Dr. Wiseley says osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and usually occurs as a person ages. He says when the pain in your hip or knees starts affecting your everyday activities it is time to consider seeing a doctor. He says a physical evaluation and x-rays will determine whether you need surgery or if it can be treated with medication. He recommends staying active with light exercise and maintaining a healthy weight. If you would like to talk to Dr. Wiseley or arrange an appointment with him contact Ripon Community Hospital.
Listening Sessions Canceled
Among the cancellations due to yesterday’s wintry weather was a pair of listening sessions scheduled by State Representative Alex Dallman in Wisconsin Dells and Portage. Dallman attributed the cancellations to the weather and the hazardous road conditions that it created. He says his office will work to reschedule the two listening sessions for a future date. The state lawmaker from Green Lake represents the 41st State Assembly District.
