Berlin Man Killed In UP Snowmobile Accident
A 53-year-old Berlin man was killed over the weekend in a snowmobile accident in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It happened in Gogebic County’s Town of Wakefield early Sunday morning. Michigan State Police troopers and Gogebic County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the accident at 1:30 that morning. A group of snowmobilers were traveling on a trail near Ramsey when the crash occurred. The Berlin man died at the scene. A 54-year-old man operating a second snowmobile was taken to a hospital in Ironwood and was later flown to a hospital in Wausau where he was treated for a broken leg and was in stable condition. Alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash.
Body Of Missing Brown County Teen Found
The Brown County Sheriff’s Office says a Wrightstown teen who was the subject of a missing and endangered person alert has been found dead. Authorities say they found a frozen body and are awaiting autopsy results to confirm whether it is 17-year-old Daniela Itzel Velazquez. They are terming her death “a tragic accident.” Her mother reported her missing at 2:41 Sunday afternoon. Ten minutes later a state trooper found the girl’s vehicle in a ditch on Blake Road, south of Highway 96. Shoes and Velazquez’s phone were found outside the car, and the keys and a wallet were found inside. The road wasn’t plowed and it looked like the car had drifted a few feet off the roadway. Blowing snow erased her footprints. Her body was found Tuesday about a quarter mile from the car. An autopsy will confirm whether she died of hypothermia.
Trial Continues For Oshkosh Man Accused Of Trying To Kill Police Officer
The prosecution has rested its case in a trial for a 20-year-old Oshkosh man suspected of stabbing a school resource officer at Oshkosh West High School in 2019. Grant Fuhrman was 17 when he allegedly attacked and stabbed Oshkosh Police Officer Michael Wissink. Wissink shot Fuhrman to stop the attack on December 3rd of 2019 at the school. Tuesday the prosecution called several expert witnesses including a trauma surgeon who cared for Officer Wissink after the attack. The prosecution also introduced into evidence the two-pronged serving fork that was allegedly used in the attack. The defense will begin calling witnesses today. Fuhrman is charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide.
Canned Food Recall
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Conagra Brands is recalling nearly 2.6 million pounds of canned meat and poultry products. The agency’s Food and Safety Inspection Service says the recall was issued due to a “packaging defect that may cause the products to become contaminated without showing any outward signs of contamination.” The recalled meat and poultry products were shipped to stores across the country and produced between December 12th, 2022 and January 13th, 2023. The establishment number “P4247” is listed on the recalled cans. The problem was discovered when Conagra notified the agency after discovering spoiled and/or leaking cans from multiple production dates at a warehouse. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the products.
Oshkosh Defense Prototype Award
The U.S. Army’s Common Tactical Truck program has selected Oshkosh Defense to produce its prototypes. Oshkosh Defense Chief Programs Officer Pat Williams says, “As the U.S. Army’s premier provider of heavy, medium, and light tactical wheeled vehicle fleets, Oshkosh is uniquely qualified to inform the CTT requirements.” Oshkosh Defense designed six CTT variants, including a Load Handling System, Off-Road Tractor, Line Haul Tractor, Cargo, Wrecker, and Tanker. As part of the prototype award, Oshkosh Defense will build and deliver three variants to the U.S. Army for test and evaluation. Oshkosh Defense will also use the resources, expertise, and technologies of the entire Oshkosh Corporation family of companies and tailor them for stringent military applications.
Markesan School Board Vacancy
The Markesan District Schools are looking for a person from the Towns of Mackford, Fox Lake or Alto to fill a vacancy on the School Board. The person appointed by the School Board will serve until April of next year. At that time, a successful candidate running for the School Board will serve a one year term to complete the original three year term. Then, the office will be up for election again in April of 2025. Making Ice
Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says our subzero temperatures overnight are firming up ice for ice fishermen and sturgeon spearers that will be heading out on the Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes soon. He says conditions have been improving beginning with some rain a few weeks ago that leveled things off on Lake Winnebago. He says our temperatures of late have been conducive to ice-making on Lake Winnebago. Sheriff Waldschmidt says it is still best to check with fishing clubs or sports shops before you head out on the ice and take some safety equipment with you like a life preserver, length of rope, and ice picks when you go. He also suggests making sure you let someone know where you will be at and when you plan to return.
Tips Needed On Catalytic Converter Thefts
The Green Lake County Crime Stoppers are still looking for tips about catalytic converter thefts from a U-Haul business in Green Lake. Sometime between the evening of January 9th and early morning hours of January 12th catalytic converters were stolen from two U-Haul trucks at ACE Island in Green Lake. The thief or thieves returned the evening of January 16th and took catalytic converters from four more U-Haul trucks. The business is located on State Highway 23 near the 300 Club. Green Lake County Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk says they need the public’s help to find the thief or thieves. Rosendale Brandon Schools Referendum
Voters in the Rosendale-Brandon School District will have two referendum questions on the April Ballot. Voters turned down a referendum last April, but District Superintendent Wayne Weber says they are facing the same issues; a funding shortage and declining enrollment. He says at a State Education conference he learned more than 80 percent of school districts in the state are experiencing declining enrollment. He says consolidating down to two buildings from four would eventually save them about $1 million a year in operating expenses, but they need to make improvements and additions to the current Rosendale Intermediate site and Laconia High School to do that. The first referendum question would ask voters to allow the District to exceed its revenue cap by $1.5 million a year for two years. A second question would ask to borrow up to $35.7 million for the consolidation. The District plans to hold information sessions about the referendum.
