COVID ARPA Funding
One of the Issues county and municipal governments are struggling with in the wake of COVID-19 is how to use the American Rescue Plan Act funds they received from the federal government. The money at first was used to help with prevention efforts and for economic recovery. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker of the former Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says those county and municipal governments are still putting those funds to good use including operational budgets which in turn eases tax burdens for property owners. Fond du Lac County last year gave $500,000 of ARPA funds to the Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area to build a new facility in Ripon, gave money toward a new homeless shelter in Fond du Lac, funded two new positions in the Department of Community Programs, purchased mobile data computers for the Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicles and paid for new software to integrate a new accounting program for the county to name a few things.
Waupun Going Through Growing Pains
Waupun Mayor Rohn Bishop says the city is in a good place now but he urges residents to have some patience as they go through some growing pains. He says they’ve seen economic development especially with the United Cooperative project and the downtown is doing well. He says a couple of businesses got together and took over an abandoned warehouse they are calling Modern Mercantile. He says he was a little nervous about that because it did create a couple of empty storefronts but they already have a few businesses lined up to go into it. Bishop says they will suffer through a few growing pains as the city’s population increases so he asks residents to have some patience because the progress will be beneficial in the end.
Quitting Tobacco Is Not Easy
If quitting smoking or vaping was a New Year’s resolution don’t be disappointed if the first attempt doesn’t accomplish your goal. Johanna Brotz is the Tobacco Prevention and Control Coordinator for Fond du Lac County. She says it is a hard habit to break. For that reason they recommend starting off with nicotine replacement therapies or NRT’s such as patches, lozenges, and gums which they consider a harm reduction tactic. She says the NRT’s are a short term solution designed to get you off tobacco and once you have then you have to ween yourself off of the NRT’s. Brotz points out the Wisconsin Quit Line can be helpful and will supply you with 2 weeks of NRT’s for no cost. They can be called at 1-800-QUIT-NOW, that’s 1-800-784-8669. Brotz says although you don’t have to see a doctor before quitting it still might be a good idea because they may be able to offer some support.
