31 January 2023 Sports

Tuesday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

The Bucks return to action tonight hosting the Hornets. Milwaukee won at Charlotte earlier in the season and then lost at home 138-109 on January 6th.

The Bucks are coming off a 135-110 victory over the Pelicans Monday night as Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 50 points in just 30 minutes to lead the way.   He shot 20-26 from the floor including 3 of 4 from 3-point range.

The NFL’s salary cap for 2023 will be a record $224.8 million per club, per multiple reports. That’s up $16.6 million from 2022.  Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said in his season-ending press conference that the team will have to make contract adjustments. That’s a given no matter what Aaron Rodgers decides to do.

If Rodgers returns to the Packers, that’s nearly $32 million right there; although, he recently said he’d be willing to re-work that contract.

And others may have to also. Aaron Jones with a hit of more than $20 million next season, and David Bakhtiari nearly $29 million. Kenny Clark and Jaire Alexander also have over $20 million each.

Packers OL Elgton Jenkins has been named as an alternate for the Pro Bowl, replacing Eagles guard Landon Dickerson. This is Jenkins’ second time getting this honor; the first was in 2020. He is the 11th Packers offensive lineman to be named to multiple Pro Bowl rosters.

In 2022, Jenkins started all 15 games he played in, making 10 starts at left guard and five at right tackle. This is after returning from a torn ACL suffered in 2021. He is a part of an o-line that ranks seventh best in the NFL in sacks allowed (32) this year.  The fourth-year Packer joins CB Jaire Alexander as the only players representing Green Bay in Las Vegas for the festivities.

The new-look Pro Bowl games, which will consist of skills competitions and non-contact flag football, will take place Sunday, February 5th at 2 p.m. CST.

An offseason that already figured to have plenty of quarterback-centric questions for the San Francisco 49ers now has even more.  In the first quarter of Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, Niners rookie quarterback Brock Purdy suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow that will keep him out for six months, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday. Based on that timeline, Purdy could return around the start of training camp or, perhaps, a couple of weeks into it.

Purdy is seeking additional medical opinions about whether he needs surgery, though the 49ers are recommending he has it, the source told Schefter.

The injury is expected to sideline Purdy for six months regardless of his decision on surgery, the source said.
