On Thursday, the Jets hired former Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett to be their new OC.
Aaron Rodgers and Hackett were close during the latter’s 3 years in Green Bay, 2 of them resulting in MVP seasons for the quarterback (2020,2021). Of course, nothing is settled with Rodgers and his future, but if he wants a trade, you would think reuniting with Hackett would be attractive. Plus, the Jets have young talent on offense and a very good defense under Head Coach Robert Saleh. Saleh and Hackett previously worked together in Jacksonville.
Lebron James and Giannis Antetokounpo were named captains for the upcoming NBA All-Star Game.
James was announced Thursday as an NBA All-Star for the 19th time, the Los Angeles Lakers’ star tying Abdul-Jabbar for the most selections in league history. James — the leading overall vote-getter — will be the captain of one of the teams for the Feb. 19 All-Star Game in Salt Lake City, while Eastern Conference voting leader Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will captain the other side.
James and Antetokounmpo will pick their teams shortly before the game in Salt Lake City, a newly announced twist and a departure from past years in which the captains picked a week or two in advance of All-Star weekend.
The Carolina Panthers have decided on their next head coach. Carolina is hiring former Colts coach Frank Reich, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Thursday. The team later announced the news. Reich will receive a four-year contract, Rapoport added.
Reich’s history with the Panthers dates back to the franchise’s first regular-season game in existence, in which Reich threw the team’s first touchdown pass (to tight end Pete Metzelaars). Reich eventually moved on from Carolina as a player, but returns to Charlotte as the new leader of the club nearly 28 years after he became its first starting quarterback.
Reich became available only after the Indianapolis Colts fired him in the middle of the 2022 season. The coach had spent the last four seasons with the Colts, leading them to two playoff appearances in their first three seasons together, but instability at quarterback contributed to their downfall and led to his in-season dismissal.
Longtime college basketball commentator Billy Packer, the voice of the NCAA tournament for more than 30 years, died Thursday night. He was 82. Packer’s two sons, Mark and Brandt, announced the news via Twitter on Thursday night. Packer had several medical issues, and ultimately succumbed to kidney failure.
Packer was the lead college basketball analyst for 34 straight Final Fours, first at NBC and then at CBS, while also doing work as an analyst for ACC games on Raycom. He received a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Personality, Studio and Sports Analyst in 1993.
