Second FDL Man Arraigned On Robbery and Murder Charges

Both Fond du Lac men suspected of robbing and killing a 26-year-old Fond du Lac man have now been arraigned in Fond du Lac County court. Last week 28-year-old Eric Perry pled not guilty to first degree intentional homicide and armed robbery with use of force charges stemming from Benzel Rose’s death. Yesterday 23-year-old Julius Freeman was arraigned and pled not guilty to the same charges. Late the night of October 17th, 2021 Fond du Lac Police responded to a 9-1-1 call for assistance at a residence in the 300 block of 8th Street. Officers found Rose dead from a gunshot wound to the head. A gun and some money were stolen from him. Perry and Freeman were picked up on probation warrants in the fall of 2021 and have been incarcerated since.

Fall River Teen Arraigned On Attempted Murder Charges

The 17-year-old Fall River man charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide for stabbing and running over a girl in Beaver Dam last October was arraigned this week. Dylan Lenz entered not guilty pleas to all five charges he faces. According to the criminal complaint Dylan Lenz told investigators he had been entertaining thoughts of “murdering people.” Police were called to the Walmart parking lot on October 15th for a hit and run. The victim suffered critical and life-threatening injuries and was taken to the UW Children’s Hospital in Madison. Lenz told investigators he stabbed her in the right shoulder with a box cutter and when she got out of his vehicle he chased after her running over her when she tripped and fell. A scheduling conference for the Dodge County case is set for March 6th

Body Identified In Oshkosh

Oshkosh Police says the remains of a man found dead in a building in the 100 block of High Street last August have been identified. He was identified as Glenn Wagner who had been living in the nonresidential structure, an empty commercial building. They say there is no evidence to suggest that his death was suspicious. Police worked with Dr. Jordan Karsten from the UW-Oshkosh to identify the remains. Dr. Karsten is the Chair of the Department of Anthropology and Associate Professor at UW-Oshkosh.

FDL Man Bound Over For Trial In Forest County

A 29-year-old Fond du Lac man facing drug charges in Forest County has been bound over for trial. A preliminary hearing was held yesterday for Thomas Owens and probable cause was found to bind him over for trial. His attorney also submitted a request for a substitution of judge. On January 2nd the Forest County Sheriff’s Office got a call about a man and woman fighting at a hotel and responded to that. While speaking to them, a deputy noticed drugs on top of a bed. The hotel room was searched and Fentanyl, Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found. Owens and 21-year-old Amanda West were arrested and were taken to the Forest County Jail. Drugs, a firearm and ammunition were also found in their vehicle and their Oshkosh residence. An adjourned initial appearance is scheduled for West on February 8th.

Poynette Man Arrested On OWI and Drug Charges

During a traffic stop in Columbia County early Tuesday morning as a Sheriff’s deputy walked up to a stopped minivan, the driver and lone occupant of that vehicle, tossed items out a side window. When the deputy arrived at the minivan the driver, 36-year-old Kasey Huber of rural Poynette, got out and moved around to the front of the vehicle. The items thrown out the window included Fentanyl and drug paraphernalia. A search of the minivan turned up Cocaine. Huber was arrested and taken to the Columbia County Jail. Among the charges he’s facing are possession charges for the Cocaine, Fentanyl, and drug paraphernalia, two counts of felony bail jumping, his 4th OWI, and more.

New Fire Truck

The Ripon Area Fire District Governing Board last fall committed to buying a new fire truck from Pierce Manufacturing. Board President Ellen Sorensen says that’s the simple way of putting it since Pierce needs about a 3 year lead time to build a fire truck to a city or town’s specifications. She says that also allows the town and city to budget for the cost of that new truck. She says prior to his retirement Fire Chief Tim Saul put together a committee that works with Pierce officials to go over specifications. She says when they arrive at what they want they will present it to the board. Sorensen says by committing to the purchase years in advance the Fire District will lock in a cost.  Pierce Manufacturing in Appleton is a subsidiary of the Oshkosh Corporation.

Better Structure

Winnebago County Supervisor Jacob Floam says he would like to see the County Board switch to a self-organized structure versus one that pays out per diem for meetings attended. Floam sits on the board’s Judiciary and Public Safety Committee. He says under a self-organized structure everyone would basically get the same level of pay. He says it is not fair to taxpayers that some supervisors are collecting pay for serving on multiple committees. Floam says he doesn’t mind seeing supervisors getting paid for mileage if they live in rural areas and have longer drives to attend meetings. He also believes the self-organized structure would benefit the 14 new supervisors elected last April who are still learning the ropes.

Ripon Police Officers Commended

Four Ripon Police officers were recently commended for their efforts to help residents in physical and mental crisis. Sergeant Jesse Tipton and Investigator Kaylee Haring used CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator to help out a person who wasn’t breathing and had no pulse. They and Ripon EMS helped restore a heartbeat. Unfortunately, the person passed away several days later.  Sergeant Brad Kurczek and Investigator Brad Rasmussen helped a person experiencing a physical and mental health crisis after taking narcotics. The officers were able to get the person under control and get the needed medical treatment. Police Chief Bill Wallner says both incidents highlight great teamwork by all those involved, and their use of highly trained skills.

Future Five

Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mandy Kimes was one of those nominated for the Young Professionals of Fond du Lac’s Future Five honors. Tonight in Fond du Lac those five will be honored and one of those five will be named the Young Professional of the Year. The Young Professionals are an Envision Greater Fond du Lac program. Envision President and CEO Sadie Vander Velde says Kimes wasn’t one of the Future Five, but has shown great promise in her short time with the chamber.  Vander Velde says nominees for the Future Five come from throughout Fond du Lac County and they started out with about 60 nominees. The awards program will be held at the South Hills Country Club in Fond du Lac with a social hour at 6 pm and the program at 7 pm.
