1/11/23 FDL County Authorities Respond to Homeless Veteran in Crisis

11 January 2023 News

A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s crisis social worker with the help of Sheriff’s deputies was able to talk down a homeless Fox Valley area veteran who was contemplating suicide Tuesday afternoon. The man was in a vehicle parked in the parking lot on the north end of the Eldorado Marsh along County Highway N. He was armed with both a revolver and a rifle. Deputies contained the scene and nearby residents were notified to shelter in place. After about an hour the man exited his vehicle and surrendered to law enforcement. He was able to meet with the crisis social worker on the scene and is receiving the medical and other assistance he needs. He is not facing any criminal charges and no one was injured during the incident. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt reminds residents the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs maintains a 24/7 crisis line for veterans which can be accessed by dialing 988. The County also maintains a 24/7 crisis line that anyone can call at 920-929-3535. As in this case, 911 can be dialed and resources deployed to help anyone struggling and in crisis.
