Friday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

In Thursday Night Football newly acquired Baker Mayfield led the Rams back to a 17-16 home victory over the Raiders.  Baker threw a 23-yard touchdown to Van Jefferson to tie the game with 10 seconds left and then Matt Gay followed withg the game-winning extra point.  Baker was signed by Los Angeles Tuesday after being cut by Charlotte and was listed as the Rams third string quarterback behind Matthew Stafford, who is out with an injury.  Backup John Wolfrod started the game but was replaced early on by Mayfield.  The victory snapped a six-game losing streak as Los Angeles improved to 4-9 while the Raiders had their two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 5-8.  Mayfield was 22-35 for 230 yards and a touchdown.  The Raiders Derek Carr was 11 for 20 for just 137 yards and was picked off twice.  Former Packer Davante Adams caught three passes for 71 yards.

The Bucks are back in action tonight at Dallas.  Milwaukee is coming off a 116-113 win over Sacramento Wednesday night as Giannis Antetokuonmpo scored 35 points and Jrue Holiday added 31.  Milwaukee is 18-6 in the Eastern Conference, two games behind Boston.  Dallas is 13-11 and in seventh place in the Western Conference.

Despite Penn State coming back to force a fifth set, the second-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team is still dancing in the NCAA tournament! The Badgers (27-3) are headed to the Elite Eight, defeating No. 11 Penn State 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 20-25 on Thursday night in the UW Field House. Wisconsin faces No. 6 PIttsburgh in the regional final on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Field House.

In men’s college basketball this weekend, Wiscosnin is at Iowa on Sunday.

On Saturday Ripon College plays at Knox College with the tipoff at 3:00. The Red Hawks are 4-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Ripon College women’s team plays at Knox College Saturday at 7:00.  Ripon is 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

The Green Bay Packers Foundation was extraordinarily generous this year, handing out a record $1.25 million to charities and civic groups this year.

The foundation says 243 charitable and civic organizations in Wisconsin received grants, including 17 totaling almost $100,000 in Brown County.

The Packers Foundation hosted a luncheon at Lambeau Field to award the annual grants. This year it focused on directing those funds to organizations that work in fields like health and wellness, environmental protection, and animal welfare. (A complete list appears at the end of this article.)

Organizations have to use the grant money for the program identified in their application for the grant. Next year, the grant cycle will focus on helping the elderly, the homeless and the hungry.

The Packers also gave a record $1.35 million in impact grants earlier this year, for a total of $2.6 million distributed by the foundation this year. Impact grants went to:

  • Bellin Health Foundation Inc.
  • Center for Black Excellence and Culture
  • Curative Connections
  • Friends of the Fox River Trail
  • Golden House
  • Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation
  • Syble Hopp

Since 1986, the Packers Foundation has awarded more than $19 million to organizations helping their communities.
