Congressman Grothman On Federal Budget

Congressman Glenn Grothman believes Congress will approve a federal budget before they break for Christmas. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says they’ve been dancing around the budget passing continuing resolutions since the new fiscal year began at the beginning of October.  He says he would like to see a zero or one percent increase in expenditures for the new budget but expects it will be more likely an 8 or 9 percent increase. He notes runaway spending by the federal government is the primary reason inflation has gotten as bad as it has and the only real way to do something about it is to decrease that spending.

Active Anniversary Year For League Of Women Voters Of The Ripon Area

The 60th year for the League of Women Voters of the Ripon Area is coming to a close, but it has been a very active anniversary for the local league. Back in April they teamed with the Ripon Historical Society for an open house and program on the league’s history. They also held candidate forums, had get out the vote efforts, and participated in a couple programs with Ripon College’s Center for Politics and the People.  League President Ellen Sorensen acted as a moderator for some of those events. She says over the past five years the political climate has been ripe for creating new leagues in Wisconsin. She says Winnebago County has one of the older leagues in the area and faculty wives and teacher’s got Ripon’s league started in the early 1960’s. She says a source of pride for the Ripon Area league is the fact that Carrie Chapman Catt was born in Ripon. She was a suffragist and that movement helped get the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution ratified which gave women the right to vote.

Freeland Film Festival Circling Back

An official with the Freeland Film Festival says they would like to return to the days when they were able to show films at a venue in Green Lake. This past weekend Freeland brought the documentary about Father Wally to the Marcus Theatre in Ripon for a showing. It was also offered through a virtual platform. Evelyn Galster of Freeland says they don’t mind doing that kind of hybrid showing of a film, but feedback they’ve received from residents indicates a longing for the days when people could go out to see a film. She says the pandemic forced them to pivot to a virtual format. Galster says they are raising funds to be able to stage the festival again. Volunteers for Freeland received some money for the organization for scanning tickets at Lambeau Field and they are waiting for word on several grant applications. Father Wally Kasuboski (KUZ-uh-bus-kee) was from the area his work in bringing improvements to eastern Panama was highlighted in the documentary film “From Mass to the Mountain.”
