Fatal House Fire In Sheboygan
A house fire in the 1300 block of South 17th Street in Sheboygan Thursday morning claimed the life of one person and injured another. Firefighters responded at about 7:30 am, learning people were still inside the home. Crews searched the residence while other firefighters put out the blaze. A woman and dog found in the house could not be revived. The woman’s husband, alerted by a smoke alarm, got out. He was unable to locate his wife in the fire. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. The cause of the fire is being determined. Responding agencies included Sheboygan Fire and Police, and fire departments from Kohler, the Town of Sheboygan, and the Town of Wilson. (Sheboygan Fire Department photo)
Smoking Materials Start Fire In FDL
Fond du Lac firefighters responded to 646 Ledgeview Boulevard late Thursday morning for a fire in a garbage can in the kitchen of the home. The homeowner used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire before the fire department arrived. The first unit on the scene finished putting out the fire and removed the debris to prevent other combustibles from igniting. A smoke alarm alerted the two occupants of the home to the fire and no one was injured. The cause of the fire was improperly discarded smoking materials. Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue reminds residents when discarding smoking or other smoldering material to make sure the materials are discarded in a suitable container outside of the home and only after confirming they are fully out.

FDL Man Facing Attempted Murder Charge
Attempted first degree intentional homicide charges have been filed against a 29-year-old Fond du Lac man. Charges stem from an incident on December 20th. Police responded to a residence, but the suspect was no longer at the scene. Witnesses told investigators he made statements about wanting to kill the victim. The suspect turned himself in to police. In addition to the attempted murder, charges referred against him include substantial battery, strangulation-suffocation, and disorderly conduct. The suspect has not made his initial court appearance yet.
Dodge County DA Resigns
Dodge County District Attorney Kurt Klomberg tendered his resignation Thursday to Governor Tony Evers effective January 13th. Klomberg has served as the District Attorney for Dodge County since 2010. Over the more than 20 years of his legal career, he served as prosecutor in Dodge, Marathon and Kenosha counties. Klomberg says, “It has been a true honor and pleasure to serve the Dodge County Community.” But he says the time has come for him to start a new chapter in his life. He says he is proud of what was accomplished during his time in the county, but he also noted like the rest of the state the county is suffering from prosecutor retirements and departures. He blames the State’s failure to keep up with the appropriate compensation levels to attract new prosecutors.
FDL Boy Hailed As A Hero
Fond du Lac Police recently recognized a young boy with a Citizen’s Community Service Award for his actions in saving the life of a child. Last February a police officer was dispatched to the 100 block of North Butler Street for a child that had been found wandering the street. Tristin K., who was 9-years-old at the time, found a 2 year old child dressed only in a diaper walking around in the below freezing temperatures. Tristin alerted his father who then called police. The child was brought into a warm home and reunited with its mother a short time later. Police say without Tristin’s quick-thinking and actions the incident could have become a tragedy.
Drugged Driving Incidents Increasing
Three of the state’s 365 highly trained Drug Recognition Experts work for law enforcement agencies in Green Lake County. Law enforcement is bracing for another holiday weekend when more drunken and drugged drivers will be on the road to celebrate the New Year. Green Lake County Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk says they are fortunate to have two of those experts working for the Sheriff’s Office and another works for the Green Lake Police Department. He says Drug Recognition Experts are able to pick up more clues that a motorist may be impaired due to drug use. He says they are also fortunate to have three dogs, two at the Sheriff’s Office and one with the Green Lake Police Department, that are also trained to detect drugs in a vehicle. Vande Kolk says last month the Sheriff’s Department had already exceeded the total number of drugged driver violations from the previous year.
Holiday Stress
A behavioral health services expert recommends keeping an eye on the mental wellbeing of family members or close friends prone to depression as the holidays come to a close. Tiffany Parker is the Director of Behavioral Health Services for SSM Health. She says many people look at the holidays as a time of joy and happiness while others dread them for a variety of reasons. She says the loss of a loved one, financial struggles and alcohol and substance use are some of those factors. She says if you suspect someone is contemplating harming themselves or is struggling with substance use be an active listener. By that she means genuinely hearing what they have to say because your reaction is important to them. Parker says only they can decide if they are willing to get professional help.
Amazing Time For Ripon Area Chamber Of Commerce Director
In June Mandy Kimes, who had spent the last nine years working as a campus minister for His House Christian Fellowship at Ripon College took a, excuse the expression, leap of faith. She accepted the job as the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce’s new executive director. Kimes hadn’t worked in the tourism industry before but dove into the new challenge. During the past six plus months she helped organized Septemberfest, Dickens of a Christmas, orchestrated a move into their new location in the Carnegie Building, and is involved in moving the Little White School House to a new location. She says it has been an exciting time for her and the Chamber. Kimes says she couldn’t have done it without the support of others especially their Board of Directors and volunteers. She succeeded Jason Mansmith as the Chamber’s Executive Director after he left to pursue a job with the Thrasher Opera House in March.
