From Wayne Mausser

The Badgers held off a late rally last night to beat Oklahoma State 24-17 to win the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix.  Braelon Allen rushed for 116 yards and scored on a 20-yard  touchdown to lead the way for Wisconsin.

The Badgers had several new starters including at quarterback after a few players entered the transfer portal, including starting quarterback Graham Mertz, when Luke Fickell was hired to be the permanent head coach, replacling the popular Jim Leonard who had been named the interim head coach during the season.  Fickell was hired away from Cincinnati after a trip to the College Football Playoff last season, joined the team on the sideline for the bowl game.  He wasn’t there  to coach as all decisions were left to Leonard.

Chris Wolf took over at quarterback for Mertz and finished 16-26 for 116 yards with a 15-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to Hayden Rucci.  He also was intercepted once in the end zone on Wisconsin’s second drive.

The Badgers finished a veryt difficult season at 7-6 while Oklahoma State dropped to 7-6.

The Packers placed defensive lineman Dean Lowry on injured reserve on Tuesday. Lowry made his 101st straight start for the Packers on Sunday in Miami, but exited the game due to a calf injury. He will be out at least four weeks after being placed on injured reserve.

Lowry will finish the regular season with 43 tackles, 23 of them solo, which is good enough for second on Green Bay’s defensive line.

The Packers also released pass rusher Tipa Galea from injured reserve on Tuesday. Galea has been sidelined for much of the season after suffering a hamstring injury against the Giants in London.

Green Bay signed wide receiver Bo Melton off the Seahawks practice squad in another corresponding roster move. Melton was drafted by Seattle in the seventh round last spring out of Rutgers.

Melton finished his college career with 164 receptions and had 2,011 receiving yards in his final season with the Scarlett Knights.

The Bucks are back in action tonight in Chicago to take on the Bulls.  Milwaukee is 22-11 and in second place in the Eastern Confeence, two games behind Boston.  The Bulls come in at 14-19.

Arizona Cardinals defensive end J.J. Watt announced on Twitter Tuesday morning he plans to retire after 12 seasons with the NFL.

Watt wrote. “My heart is filled with nothing but love and gratitude. It’s been an absolute honor and a pleasure.”

Watt was the Texans’ first-round draft pick in 2011. He’s a three-time Defensive Player of the Year winner and was honored as the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2017.

The Pewaukee native, who won the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year award in 2012, 2014 and 2015, has played in 12 NFL seasons, including 10 in Houston and two in Arizona.  Watt has racked up 111.5 sacks, 17 fumble recoveries and 27 forced fumbles in his career thus far.

Arizona plays at Atlanta on New Year’s Day and wraps up its 2022-23 season at San Francisco on Jan. 8.
