Friday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

The Packers continue to get ready for the Bears Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago.  Green Bay (4-8) is still hoping to get hot and with some  help get iinto the postseason.  Chicago (3-9) is even deeper in the hole.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers who left the Philadelphia game in the third quarter with a rib injury says after a scan on Monday, he feels okay and expects to play.  His back up, Jordan Love looked good on Sunday night, going 6-9 for 113 yards and a 63-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Christian Watson.  If Rodgers gets hurt or the Packers get eliminated from the post season, Love feels he’s ready to step and play.

“It’s obviously a test whenever it happens. You’re never really expecting it. You’ve just got to be on your toes for whenever it happens. I’m confident in myself that I’ll be able to handle it,” said Jordan Love.

He said experience helps in picking things quicker at a game-pace.

“Feel more comfortable, more confident, and I’m just seeing things a little bit quicker. Playing at a faster level right now. More comfortable doing everything, play calling, seeing defenses,” said Love.

Rodgers said he’d be open to talking about sitting down for the season once Green Bay is eliminated, but that’s not the case yet. A conversation for a later date, even for Love.

“Yeah, obviously that’s what I want, and that’s the goal but it’s just not the situation right now,” said Love.

For now, Love will continue to improve on the practice field and wait for that next opportunity to build on his experience.

“Getting those in-game reps, it helps seeing it a little bit different. See what it feels like to be in the game, and then taking it to practice it helps,” said Love.

The Packers are about as healthy as you might expect this time of the season but most of their injured will most likely play Sunday.  Safety Darnell Savage did not practice Thursday.

You can hear all of the action Sunday, beginning with the pregame at 10:00 and the kickoff at noon on FM 1023, The Bug.

Christian Watson has been named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month. That, after catching six touchdown passes in the last three games.  Five have come from Aaron Rodgers and last Sunday he caught a 63-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Love, who replaced Rodgers after he left the game in the third quarter.

If you told him at the beginning of November that he would win that award, it would have surprised him. At the end of October he left the Buffalo game with a concussion then started November by exiting in Detroit after a vicious hit in that game.

But since then, he’s been on a tear and is turning into a go-to receiver as a rookie.

“It wasn’t really something I was thinking about,” Watson said. “Obviously I was up and down with injuries and being out and whatnot. But I was working every day to just get better. The #1 thing for me is to just be thankful that I have been able to stay consistent, health wise, to get out there and get that work in. I always kind of believe in myself. If I am able to go out there and play fast, everything else was going to come with it.”

In Thursday Night Football the Buffalo Bills won at New England, defeating the Patriots 24-10.  The Patriots (6-6) led 7-3 after the first quarter but Buffalo jumped out to a 17-7 halftime lead.  The third quarter was scoreless but the Bills added a touchdown in the fourth quarter and New England (9-3)  tacked on a late field goal for the final margin.

Josh Allen was 22 of 33 for 223 yards and two touchdowns for the Bills and Stefon Diggs caught seven passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.  James Cook gained 64 yards on 14 carries and Devin Singletary rushed for 51 yards on 13 carries and scored a touchdown.

The Patriots Mac Jones was 22 of 36 for 195 yards and a touchdown to Marcus Jones, who caught two passes for 51 yards.  New England managed just 60 yards rushing on the night.

In World Cup soccer action Saturday, the U.S. meets the Netherlands.  The U.S. advanced after a 1-0 victory over Iran.

In the NBA tonight, the Bucks (15-5) are back in action hosting the Los Angeles Lakers (8-12).  Milwaukee  was led by Giannis Antetokuonmpo’s 37 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, but it was  a late three-pointer by Grayson Allen that made the difference in a 109-103 win over the Knicks.
