Tyler Wahl scored seven of his 21 points in overtime and Wisconsin rallied to beat Iowa 78-75 in the Hawkeyes’ Big Ten Conference opener on Sunday night.
Wahl sank 9 of 14 shots and added seven rebounds and three assists for the Badgers (8-2, 2-0). Connor Essegian scored 14 with six rebounds. Steven Crowl pitched in with 12 points, six boards and seven assists. Chucky Hepburn contributed 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Patrick McCaffery topped the Hawkeyes (7-3) with 24 points. Older brother Connor McCaffrey finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Tony Perkins added 17 points, while Filip Rebraca scored 10 with eight rebounds.
Patrick McCaffery buried a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to send the game to overtime tied at 60. He opened the extra period with a three-point play and added two free throws to give Iowa a 65-62 lead. Perkins hit a jumper to put the Hawkeyes up three, but Wahl buried a 3-pointer to knot the score at 69 with 1:59 remaining.
Patrick McCaffrey followed with a three-point play, but Jordan Davis hit a 3 to pull the Badgers even. Crowl scored in the paint and Hepburn hit two free throws to put Wisconsin up 76-73 with 26 seconds left. Rebraca and Essegian traded layups before Patrick McCaffery missed a 3-pointer on the game’s final shot.
Patrick McCaffery made two free throws and a layup in an 8-0 run and Iowa grabbed its first lead of the game 27-25 with 33 seconds left in the first half. Chucky Hepburn hit a jumper with 2 seconds left to pull Wisconsin even at intermission.
The Badgers sank 12 of 20 shots from inside the arc, missed 10 of 11 tries from beyond it and didn’t attempt a free throw in the first half.
Wisconsin hosts Lehigh Thursday night at 6:00.
Kam Jones scored 25 points, Oso Ighodaro added a double-double and Marquette breezed to a 79-64 victory over Notre Dame on Sunday.
Jones sank half of his 20 shots with four 3-pointers for the Golden Eagles (8-3). Ighodaro added 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Olivier-Maxence Prosper had 14 points and Tyler Kolek scored 11 with six assists.
Nate Laszewski paced the Fighting Irish (7-3) with 20 points and seven rebounds. JJ Starling scored 12.
Ighodaro had 10 points and 10 rebounds to guide Marquette to a 34-29 lead at halftime.
The Golden Eagles scored the first seven points of the second half to push their lead to 12. Ighodaro’s rebound dunk gave Marquette its largest lead 77-57 with 2:57 left to play.
Notre Dame leads the all-time series between former Big East Conference rivals 81-38. Marquette won for just the 14th time in 62 games on Notre Dame’s home floor.
Notre Dame inducted former Fighting Irish standout John Shumate, a two-time All American from 1971-74, into its Ring of Honor at halftime. Shumate averaged a double-double for his career — 22.6 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. On Jan. 19, 1974, Shumate had 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Irish to a 71-70 victory over UCLA, snapping the Bruins’ record 88-game win streak.
In the NFC North Sunday the Lions upset the Vikings in Detroit 34-23. The game was tied at 7 after the first quarter and Detroit led at the half 14-7. It was 21-13 at the end of three quartes. Lions quarterback Jared Goff was 27-39 for 330 yards and three touchdowns. Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 31 of 41 passes for 425 yards and two touchdowns. Detroit held Minnesota running back Dalvin Cook to 23 yards on 15 carries and overall the Vikings had just 22 yards on the ground. The Lions improved to 6-7 and moved into second place in the North while the division-leading Vikings fell to 10-3. The 5-8 Packers are in third while the Bears are 3-10. Despite not playing the Packers saw their playoff hopes get better. Chicago also had its bye Sunday.
In Sunday Night fooball the Chargers won at home over the Dolphins 23-17. San Diego quarterback Justin Herbert was 39 of 51 for for 367 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Mike Williams caught six passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was just 10 for 28 for 145 yards and a touchdown to Tyreek Hill.
In Monday Night Football New England plays at Arizona.
In the NBA Sunday, the Bucks lost at Houston 97-92. The Rockets were led by Jalen Green’s 30 points and Kevin Porter Jr. had 18. Milwaukee was led by Jru Holidays 25 points and Bobby Portis chipped in with 17. Giannis Antetokounmpo played nearly 37 minutes and was held t0 16 points. Houston, now 10-18, remains in last place in the Western Conference while Milwaukee dropped to 19-7, 1 ½ games behind Eastern Conference leaders, the Boston Celtics. The Bucks are back at the Pfizer Forum Tuesday night to host the Golden State Warriors.
The Packers are back on the practice field this week after their bye. Green Bay hosts the Los Angeles Rams next Monday night. The Packers are 5-8 and still mathematically alive to make the playoffs. The Rams come into the game at 4-9 and are in last place in the NFC West.
The men’s World Soccer Cup continues Tuesday where in semi-final action Argentina plays Croatia.
