Sports for Wednesday

The biggest move the Packers made Tuesday was releasing running back Patrick Taylor from the active roster. So, no last minute pick-ups at the NFL trade deadline and no new big name receivers for Aaron Rodgers to target.

The rest of the NFC North, however, was busy.

Green bay won’t have to worry about tight end T.J. Hockenson this weekend in Detroit. The Lions trading him to the Vikings, who are 6-1 leading the North.

The Packers were reportedly in the conversation for receiver Chase Claypool but the Bears swing a deal with the Steelers, costing them a second round pick.

Finally, Texans’ receiver Brandin Cooks is staying in Houston. Some thought he might fit in Green Bay, but he has a lot of salary on his deal.

At least this past weekend there was growth from the Packers’ two rookie receivers.

Romeo Doubs bouncing back from his multi-drop game in Washington. He had 4 catches for 62 yards and a highlight reel score in Buffalo and Samori  Toure caught his first touchdown pass Sunday, a 37-yarder from Aaron Rodgers that caught the eye of Rodgers.

“I had a conversation with him weeks ago about projecting how the season would go,” Rodgers said on the Pat McAfee Show. “I said to him ‘I think you’re too talented to be a healthy scratch every week. I think it’s possible for you and even probable that you need to be suiting up and making plays by midseason.’ I don’t think that was like some sparkplug for him to get going and start practicing better, but he has been practicing really well. I’ve been proud of the effort he’s been showing during the week. Then he goes out in a game and makes a really nice adjustment play.”

Jordy Nelson and Josh Sitton will be inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 2023. The Packers announced Tuesday that the fan favorite WR Nelson and Guard Sitton will be inducted as part of the 52nd Hall of Fame Banquet at Lambeau Field.

The banquet is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, in the Atrium. Ticket information is being finalized.

Nelson was selected by the Packers in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. The Kansas State alum played nine seasons with the Packers. He’s No. 4 in team history with receptions at 550 and No. 6 in receiving yards with 7,848.

Nelson is the only Packer to have have three seasons with 13-plus touchdown receptions. Nelson is No. 3 in touchdown receptions with 69.  He was also  a big part of the Super Bowl XLV win with nine receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown.

Sitton was selected by the Packers in the fourth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. The University of Central Florida alum played eight seasons with Green Bay, starting 112 of 121 regular-season games.  He was named the 2010 Offensive Lineman of the Year by the NFL Alumni Association.

The Milwaukee Bucks will try to extend their winning streak to seven games opening the season as they host the Pistons at Fiserv Forum.  Milwaukee is coming off a  110-108 victory over Detroit,  Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 31 points, Jrue Holiday had 25 and Brook Lopez chipped in with the 24.  Milwaukee is 6-0 while Detroit is 2-4 in the Eastern Conference.

Bryce Harper got the party started with a 2-run shot in the 1st, and it didn’t stop. The Phils tagged Houston starter Lance McCullers Jr. for 5 HRs  in a 7-0 World Series rout at Citizens Bank Park in game three. The five homers were the most a pitcher has ever allowed in a postseason game — as an electric Citizens Bank Park crowd was treated to a Game 3.  It was Philadelphia’s first home series game since 2009.

Alec Bohm started the second inning with a solo homer off McCullers. Two batters later Brandon Marsh hit a two-run homer to make it 4-0.  Kyle Schwarber then blasted a two-run home run in the six to make it 6-0  Rhys Hoskins followed with a solo homer to left to finish off the night’s scoring. The Phillies had just seven but five were homers while the Astros managed just five hits.

Lefthander Ranger Suarez  went five innings, scattering three hits while striking out four and walking one, to pick up the win. McCullers Jr. lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up all seven runs on six hits to take the loss.

It was Harper’s sixth homer of the postseason, which is second in Phillies history only to Jayson Werth (2009). Rhys Hoskins (2022), Chase Utley (2009) and Lenny Dykstra (1993) also hit six. It was Harper’s fourth go-ahead homer of the postseason, which is tied for second in postseason history. He trails only Albert Pujols, who hit five in 2004.

The Phillies lead 2-1 with game four tonight as Houston sends righthander Christian Javier (11-9, 2.54 ERA to the mound against Philadelphia righthander Eric Nola (11-13, 4.57 ERA).  Javier is 1-0 in the postseason while Nola is 2-1.  First pitch is at 7:03 CDT.

After their bye week the Wisconsin hosts Maryland at Camp Randall.  The Badgers are 4-4 while the Terrapins are 6-2.   Wisconsin’s last game was a surprising 35-24 victory over Purdue which left the Badgers at 2-3 in the Big Ten and 4-4 overall.  Wiscosnin is 2-1 since Jim Leonard was named interim head coach replacing Paul Chryst.

The Badgers are slight favorites.
