Carbon Monoxide Safety Reminders

The Fond du Lac County Health Department reminds residents to put new batteries in their carbon monoxide detectors while they are changing their clocks this weekend. Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday and clocks have to be set back an hour. Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says they tend to see more carbon monoxide poisonings in the cooler months. She says residents should make sure their heating sources and carbon monoxide detectors are in good working order. According to data from the Wisconsin Environmental Public Health Tracking Program on average, carbon monoxide poisoning sends about 500 Wisconsinites to the emergency room each year. If people are prepared those trips to the ER for carbon monoxide poisoning are preventable. In addition to working carbon monoxide detectors it is suggested that furnace or wood-burning stoves be inspected annually. Generators should be run at least 20 feet from your home and cars should not be run in confined spaces.
