From Wayne Mausser

The Packers continue to get ready for the Commanders on Sunday in Washington.  Green Bay’s defense goes up against backup Taylor Heinicke after starting quarterback Carson Wentz  underwent surgery to repair a broken finger on his throwng hand.  The Packers are familiar with Heinicke who gave them trouble last year in Green Bay, throwing for 265 yards and a touchdown and rushing for an additional 95 yards.

The Packers defense will be up against a Commnaders offensive line that is suspect having already given up 23 sacks and will be trying to pressure Heinicke as much as possibile

“We just got to finish strong in the second half. WE got to start strong and finish strong, and any opportunity we get we’ve got to maximize. We got to make sure we’re the guys that come up with it, don’t allow them to get the ball back, and we got to get opportunities to get our offense in good positions,” said outside linebacker Preston Smith..

On the flip side, the Commanders’ pass rush will also be a concern this week for the Packers offense. As a group they rank fourth the NFL with 19 sacks through six games. That’s with five players already accounting for three or more sacks individually as well.  That will be a big challenge for a Packers offensive line that gave up four sacks against the Jets last Sunday, prompting some questions about whether or not they should shuffle some members of the offensive line around.

One of those players could be Elgton Jenkins, who has played all over the line in his career. Including time at guard, center, and currently right tackle.

“It’s challenging. Something I’ve done before. It’s challenging right now coming off the ACL, but with work and keep on critiquing your game I feel like I can get it done,” said Jenkins.

The Packers will need to get the offense off to a good start and then means getting running backs Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon more involved.  As for the passing game, it’s still wait and see as to whether wide receiver Sammy Watkins will be able to play. Green Bay has already lost Randall Cobb for the forseeable future after he sprained his ankle against the Jets.  Robert Tonyan was Aaron Rodgers favorite target last week as he set a team record for a tight end with 10 catches and he may be busy again against the Commanders.

The Packers (3-3) have lost two straight games under head coach Matt LaFleur for the first time in his four-year career as head coach while the Commanders are 2-4.  The pregame starts at 10:00 with the kickoff at noon and can be heard on FM 102.2, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football Arizona won at home in a wild game, 42-34, over the New Orleans Saints.  The Cardinals intercepted quarterback Andy Dalton three times in the first half, stopping a drive inside their ten on the first pick and then returning the other two for touchdowns, taking a 28-14 halftime lead. New Orleans tried to come back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Arizona 17-7, but came up short. The Cardinals improve to 3-4 while the Saints drop to 2-5.

Christian McCaffrey is heading back to the Bay Area. The San Francisco 49ers are acquiring the dynamic dual-threat running back from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a host of draft picks, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported late Thursday night.

In exchange for McCaffrey, the Panthers will receive a 2023 NFL Draft second-round pick, a 2023 third-rounder, a 2023 fourth-rounder and a 2024 fifth-round pick. Carolina and San Francisco subsequently announced the trade.

The Milwaukee Bucks opened their season at Philadelphia Thursday night with a win.   Wesley Matthews hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 23.8 seconds left, and Giannis Antetokounmpo had 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bucks to a 90-88 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday night.

Brook Lopez scored 17 points as the Bucks, who went 0-5 in the preseason, won their season opener after Matthews surprised the Sixers on the long 3. James Harden, who scored 31 and rallied the Sixers in the fourth, missed a jumper that could have won the game.

Matthews, starting his 14th NBA season, hit two 3s and scored eight points, including the winner off a kick-out pass from Grayson Allen.

“It was a great decision and Wes was able to knock down the shot,” Antetokounmpo said.

The 76ers lost their opener Tuesday night in Boston and had another weak defensive effort early that had the Philly crowd booing them off the court in the third quarter.

Tyrese Maxey added 15 points for the Sixers. Joel Embiid was shut down by Lopez and Antetokounmpo and did not score in the second half. Embiid, who declined to talk to the media, finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bucks play their home opener Saturday against Houston.
