The Packers return to the practice field today in preparation for Sunday’s game at Washington against the Commaders (2-4). The Packers will try to snap the first two-game losing streak for coach Matt LaFleur in his four year career in Green Bay as they begin a three-game road swing.
The Packers are searching for ways to boost their offense as they’re averaging just 17.8 points per game to rank 24th out of 32 teams. Part of the problem lies up front on the offensve to not only protect Aarron Rodgers but also help the running game be successful. The Packers have not been able to successfully sustain a consistent running game with Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon.
The Packers (3-3) tried making one change to the offensive line Sunday when they put Jake Hanson in for Royce Newman at right guard, though Newman returned once Hanson went down with a biceps injury.
LaFleur was asked Monday about the possibility of moving right tackle Elgton Jenkins back to guard, where he was a Pro Bowl performer in 2020.
“I think everything’s up for discussion,” LaFleur said.
The versatile Jenkins filled in for an injured Bakhtiari capably at left tackle last year before a torn anterior cruciate ligament ended his season, but he has struggled at right tackle this year.
“I’m not opposed to any position at this point — especially with these past two weeks,” Jenkins said Monday. “Whatever helps the team and whatever helps us win, I’m with it.”
Another option for the Packers at right tackle if they do move Jenkins back to left guard is Yosh Nijman. He started at right tackle for the first two games of the season.
The Packers also need help at wide receiver after Randall Cobb left Sunday’s game against the Jets with an ankle injury and will miss some time. Green Bay is hoping to have veteran Sammy Watkins back. TE Robert Tonyan had a career-high 10 catches for 90 yards against the Jets and WR Allen Lazard has a touchdown catch in four of the five games he’s played this season.
Defensively, the bright spot has been outside linebacker Rashan Gary, who recorded his sixth sack of the season Sunday against the Jets. Green Bay’ defense has recorded no turnovers in the last two games and on the season have a minus-4 turnover margin.
Following this week’s game at Washington, Green Bay plays at Buffalo and then Detroit.
In the ALDS the Yankees advanced on to the championship series with a 5-1 victory over Cleveland to win that series 3-2. The NLCS began last night as the Phillies shutout the Padres on the road 2-0. The two teams play game two this afternoon and the ALCS begins tonight in Houston with the Astros hosting the Yankees.
