FDL County Burglary

An employee of a Town of Empire business came upon burglary suspects early Monday morning as they were leaving the facility at W3150 Fond du Lac County Highway H. An employee of Sabel Mechanical saw two people with masks and a suspicious vehicle. They quickly got into the vehicle and left. About an hour later a Sheriff’s deputy on a medical call spotted the suspects’ vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Three individuals were taken into custody and booked into the jail on burglary charges. Deputies and detectives were able to recover some of the items taken from the business in a tall grassy area. County residents are asked to be on the lookout for power tools that may be concealed on their property. That would be especially in the towns of Empire, Forest, Eden, Osceola, Auburn, and Ashford. If you find any tools on your property call the Sheriff’s Office at 920-929-3390 or Detective Derek Rehfeldt at 920-929-3377. If you wish to remain anonymous you can call 920-906-4777.

Columbus Man Pleads To Bank Robbery Charges

The 44-year-old Columbus man suspected of robbing a branch of the Horicon Bank in the Village of Neosho last January has pled guilty to charges of robbery of a financial institution, misdemeanor theft, and felony bail jumping.  According to the criminal complaint during the January 26th robbery Alan Schade handed a teller at the bank a note demanding money and saying no one would get hurt if it was placed in the bag the teller was given. The teller placed the money in the bag including “bait money” with documented serial numbers. Approximately $4,155 was taken during the robbery. Schade was out on bond from a Waukesha County case and as part of the bond conditions was wearing a GPS ankle monitor. Data from the monitor placed him in the bank at the time of the robbery and at a bank in Ixonia that was robbed two days before that. Schade will be sentenced on January 4th. Dodge County District Attorney Kurt Klomberg will be recommending he receive 15 years in prison and 18 years of extended supervision.

A 33-year-old Fall River man trying to avoid a seventh operating while intoxicated offense unsuccessfully fled from a Columbia County Sheriff’s deputy Monday afternoon. Landy Cardenas Hernandez was speeding and weaving all over the road on Highway 60 in the Town of Columbus. The deputy gave chase but a short distance later Cardenas Hernandez crashed his vehicle in a ditch and got stuck. He wasn’t compliant with the deputy’s demands however; he was taken into custody without incident. In addition to the OWI offense, he was charged for eluding, and operating with a revoked driver’s license.  He was also cited for several traffic violations.  He made his initial court appearance Tuesday. Bond was set at $1,000 cash and a preliminary hearing was held Wednesday.

Highway 151 Project Completed

The state’s Department of Transportation tells us construction has been completed on improvements to US Highway 151 between County Highway W and County Highway Q in Fond du Lac County. The $693,000 project in the Town of Malone was finished on budget. Construction included replacing existing corrugated metal culvert pipes with reinforced concrete culvert pipes at four locations within a three-quarter mile length of roadway along US 151 between County Highway W and County Highway Q. Radtke Contractors of Winneconne was the prime contractor for the project. The replaced culverts will help ensure adequate drainage to mitigate possible flooding and increase safety for motorists.

No Monkeypox Cases In FDL County

The public health officer for Fond du Lac County says the county hasn’t seen any Monkeypox cases. Kim Mueller says Monkeypox is on the decline across the country and she would be surprised to see an increase at this point. However, she says the Health Department has Monkeypox vaccine to help protect those who are at higher risk of contracting it. She says those who are gay or bisexual seem to be more prone to getting Monkeypox which is passed along through intimate contact. Mueller stresses they will keep vaccinations confidential for anyone who wants them. To arrange an appointment call the Fond du Lac County Health Department at 920-929-3085.

Planet In Peril

The Center for Politics and The People at Ripon College will host a presentation at the Kresge Little Theatre, East Hall on Thursday, October 27th at 6:30 pm about the four mega-dangers facing human kind. Henrik Schatzinger is Co-Director for the Center. He says sometimes he reviews the top publishers to see what books they have available that might lend itself to a topic that might be of interest to the community and on campus. That’s how he chose Planet in Peril: Humanity’s Four Greatest Challenges and How We Can Overcome Them. The book was written by Vanderbilt University Professor Michael Bess who will give the presentation. Schatzinger says he doesn’t want to give away what those mega-dangers are but climate control is one of them. The free talk is open to public. In addition to the center it is sponsored by Ripon College’s History, Sociology and Anthropology Departments, and Environmental Studies program.
