Ripon Man Facing New Drug Charges

Drug charges have been filed against a 25-year-old Ripon man who was allegedly high when police encountered him at the eastside Kwik Trip store in Ripon on July 17th. According to the criminal complaint police were actually looking for the woman Adam Kastenschmidt was with because she was wanted on a warrant through probation and parole. She told them she and Kastenschmidt had just returned from Oshkosh where they had bought a large quantity of methamphetamine. Kastenschmidt allegedly told officers where he stashed the drugs in the vehicle he had arrived at the store in. Police found two bags of crystal meth weighing a little over a half of an ounce. They also found a third of a gram of heroin. Kastenschmidt is charged with felony counts of possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and bail jumping. Small Chemical Release At FDL Apartment Complex

The Fire and Rescue Department in Fond du Lac responded to the Countryside Village Apartments for a chemical release Thursday afternoon. Officials say a contractor was working in the pool area and mechanical room when two chemical pumps turned on. A small amount of sulfuric acid and chlorine mixed on the floor, creating a small chemical reaction that released gas. The contractor cut off the power to the pumps and was diluting the chemical mix when firefighters arrived. They continued diluting the chemicals and a floor drain. Representatives of the apartment complex and the contractor evacuated tenants from the area. None of the tenants reported feeling ill. After firefighters made sure the offices were properly ventilated and safe they cleared from the scene. Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue was dispatched to the apartment complex at 1:19 pm and they were on the scene about 75 minutes.

JFC Approves Opioid Settlement Plan

State Senator Joan Ballweg joined her Joint Finance Committee colleagues Thursday in approving a plan to allocate $31 million Wisconsin will get as part of the nationwide opioid settlements. The state lawmaker from Markesan says, “After speaking with folks like law enforcement officers, local health care clinics, county officials and the Boys and Girls Clubs, it was apparent there were areas in the Department of Health Services plan that needed to be included.” Areas updated in the plan include a grant program for law enforcement so they can provide training on medication-assisted treatment education; improve community drug disposal programs, support diversion and deflection strategies and more. Additionally, it allocates dollars to Boys and Girls Clubs to address root causes of substance abuse and builds on successful programs implemented through the HOPE Agenda in past sessions.

Drivers Urged To Be Attentive

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt urges drivers to pull over when they see emergency lights coming up. He says there is usually a good reason law enforcement officers are using their lights and sirens. He stresses it could be to protect you or it could be to protect them from oncoming traffic. Waldschmidt says in some of the nearly 30 traffic pursuits they have been involved in this year the vehicle they were pursuing was driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic at speeds at or over 100 miles an hour.  He says his deputies won’t drive the wrong way to pursue a driver, but will use a parallel road or highway to warn others. Waldschmidt urges residents to be attentive while they are driving because a few seconds of distraction could lead to a potential tragedy.

Concussion Prevention

After all the studies and laws passed to reduce concussions and head injuries in sports, teams are taking more precautions to protect younger athletes. Chris Schattschneider is an athletic trainer and sports medicine lead for SSM Health’s Ripon Community Hospital. He works with the Ripon School District, Ripon College and other schools. He says football teams have reduced the amount of contract drills they use in practice. He says part of that is to prevent concussions and head injuries, but in high school football there is less participation then there used to be so they are also concerned about any injuries that might reduce their roster of available players. Schattschneider says athletic trainers and coaches have gotten very good about spotting the symptoms of a concussion. He points out it takes at least 13 days to return from that type of injury, but they won’t let an athlete return until it is safe to do so.

He says during Ignite’s first meeting last month they found out people want to learn more about marketing and especially how to do that with social media. Wednesday’s meeting will focus on financial skills, but TerBeest says they have topics hashed out for several months to come. Snacks and nonalcoholic beverages will be available during the Ignite Ripon meeting.
