Sports for Wednesday

From Wayne Mausser

Randal Grichuk smashed two homers including a walk-off three-run blast in the 10th inning to lead the Rockies to a 10-7 comeback win over the Brewers Tuesday night.

Milwaukee had a five-run lead before Colorado scored five runs in the 8th inning to tie it. Then the Brewers took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 10th before the Rockies rallied to win it.

Christian Yelich hit the-longest home run of the year tracked by Statcast on the fourth pitch of the game, projected  at 499 feet for Milwaukee. It was his 12 of the season.  Hunter Renfroe also homered in the first inning, a two-run blast that gave Milwaukee a quick 3-0 lead.  It was Renfroe’s 25th of the season.

Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff had a good outing going seven innings and giving up just one run on two hits while striking out five and walking two, but then the bullpen collapsed.  Luis Perdomo was unable to get an out in the 8th inning, giving up four runs on four hits. Peter Strzelecki came in an pitched 1 2/3 innings giving one run on two hits, tying the game in the ninth.  Toby Milner got the final out.  Then in the 10th Taylor Rogers (3-7) was tagged for four runs, three earned as Colorado rallied for the win.

The loss drops the Brewers three games behind the Phillies and Padres in the race for the final Wild Card spot.

The Brewers and Rockies play again this afternoon as Milwaukee sends left-hander Eric Lauer (10-6, 354 ERA) against Colorado lefty Kyle Freeland (7-9, 4.79 ERA).  First pitch is at 2:10 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Cardinals beat the Nationals 4-1, the Pirates over the Mets 8-2 and the Cubs downed the Reds 9-3.  St. Louis has a commanding 8 ½ game lead over Milwaukee in the division.

In the Midwest League Tuesday night the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers bombed Beloit 13-0 at Fox Cities Stadium.  The teams play again this afternoon with the first pitch at 12:10.

The Packers are back on the practice field today in preparation for Sunday’s season-opener at Minnesota.  The Packers hope that left tackle David Bakhtiari is ready to go against the Vikings.  They also hope that wide receiver Allen Lazard will be back on the practice field.  He has missed the last two practices and the team has not disclosed why.  Lazard was the only player on the 53-man roster who did not practice Monday.

Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin re-introduced a bill Tuesday to ensure that all residents of Wisconsin can watch the Green Bay Packers on television.

The bill, dubbed the Go Pack Go Act, would affect 13 counties and almost 415,000 people that are part of television markets based in other states.

The counties impacted would be Barron, Burnett, Dunn, Pierce, Polk, St. Croix and Washburn counties in northwestern Wisconsin, which are part of the Twin Cities media market; Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Iron and Sawyer Counties in northern Wisconsin, which are part of the Duluth-Superior media market; and Florence County, which is in the Marquette, Mich. media market.

The affected counties receive programming from an out-of-state market, so any time the Packers play at the same time as the team that is part of the out-of-state market, fans in those counties receive that out-of-state market team’s broadcast. If the Minnesota Vikings are playing at the same time as the Packers, a dozen counties in northwestern Wisconsin will receive the Minnesota game. In Florence County, the Detroit Lions game is televised instead of the Packers if they play at the same time.

The bill would require providers to give Wisconsin subscribers access to programming from stations in Wisconsin’s television markets, ensuring that any cable or satellite customer in Wisconsin can choose to view the Packers, as well as Wisconsin-based news and other programming.
